mumbai attacks
http://www.cnn.com/
(CNN) -- Several people have been killed in a series of coordinated attacks targeting Mumbai sites popular with tourists and business people, according to police and CNN's sister network in India.
Ongoing battles between police and gunmen were reported at two five-star hotels.
Gunmen armed with automatic weapons and grenades attacked targets including the hotels, a cafe, and a train station, police say.
Maharashtra state government spokesman Bhushan Gagri said 78 people killed and about 200 wounded, while police confirmed 26 deaths.
Among the dead is the head of the Maharashtra state's anti-terror squad, who apparently died in the violent aftermath of the attacks rather than being a target for the killers.
The attacks included five shootouts and two grenade attacks, said a police officer at Mumbai's police control room.
Mumbai police spokesman Satish Katsa said gunmen have taken over the Taj Mahal Hotel and Hotel Oberoi, and were holding hostages on multiple floors.
Earlier, A.N. Roy, the police chief of Maharashtra state, said his force was still involved with suspected militants at the two five-star hotels.
IBN reported ongoing gun battles at both hotels. At least two explosions were reported at the Taj.
One witness told local reporters gunmen had tried to find people with U.S. or British passports.
IBN, quoting police sources, reported hostages were taken at the two hotels.
The attacks began about 2230 local time (1700 GMT) and more than two hours later witnesses were reporting new explosions and gunfire.
The targets include businesses frequented by international visitors in the city which is India's financial center.
CNN correspondent Andrew Stevens said: "We are getting reports of ongoing incidents at the railway station and the Oberoi Hotel.
"We do not know if this has reached its peak or if more attacks to come."
A local journalist told CNN he had seen evidence of an attack at the city's domestic airport, which is on the outskirts of the Mumbai.
IBN reported explosions at a gas station and inside a taxi on a dockside road.
Attacks were reported at the Taj and Oberoi hotels, the popular Café Leopold, and Cama Hospital, and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station.

Who knows; the problem with terror and India is that there are so many groups with grudges.
I will say that I do not think this was Al Queda, as I'm willing to bet they would've used more than AKs and grenades on a large string of coordinated attacks.
In fact, I'm surprised that Al Queda hasn't set off a dirty bomb in a large Christian or Hindu (the more likely target considering history). India has enough corruption and loose security that making a real nasty version of one of those bombs and deploying it would be highly feasible.
I was a little worried at first about this more so than I am now. That was because my mother made it sound like the Indian government was rounding up American and British citizens, which in my mind would be a precursor for war. The problem with India would be their alliance with, in particular, China, and the little tidbit that they have the largest navy in the world. I'm not entirely sure on that last one, but there you go. It was a bit of a relief that that wasn't the case. The world doesn't need a World War right now.enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P
Bigdog-Sweet home Alabama you are an idiot.

With the head of their anti - terror squad dead, I hope they still send in some anti terror squad to own the hostage takers.

2) Terrorists do not care if there countrymen or relatives have to die in order to make a statement. If 50 innocent non-American/Western lives are lost to kill 1 innocent American/Westerner, it is a trade worth making.
3) Terrorists (and people like Iranian President Amadinejad) believe that by starting a massive war to wipe out Christians, Jews, and Westerners in general, they will hasten the return of the 12th Imam. Admittedly, I am not exactly sure how that works in the Islamic faith, but I think it has something along the significance of the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ to Christians.
4) In all likelihood, the terrorists that committed these acts are not Indians. If they are, they are probably not from the same region. And if they are both Indian and from the same region, it doesn't matter anyway. They don't see themselves as Indians. They see themselves as soldiers of Allah. Don't believe me? Go find any terrorist website (or even watch the tapes made by some of the British nationals that have turned to terrorism in the name of Islam). They DO NOT give a rats ass about their country, their lives, or the lives of others. Anything goes in the name of a jihad.
5) Mumbai is a highly Westernized section of India. When it was colonized by the British, a huge amount of Brits lived there. It is also a major tourist destination that lots of Westerners visit. According to a story on my Yahoo browser, 4 Australians, 1 Japanese, 1 German, 1 Italian, and 1 Briton are all confirmed killed in these attacks. I guarantee that we will see this number double, at the very least. Although these attacks took place in India, they are really an attack on the West.
In closing, I leave this: Death to Terrorists and all those Who Support Them.

Hard to generalize this one based on the numbers.
