If, and it is a big if, this significantly reduces or eliminates black market heroin, and if the government is actually doing something to ween the addicts off of the drugs, then it might work. Otherwise it is just your basic, "they are going to do it, so we might as well control it" philosophy.

Well the question has always been, if you legalize and control drugs, what will be of the cartels? Will drug trafficking be stopped? Crime go down?
Cartels are an immense problem in latin america. Many countries have become "drug states", where 90% of the crime is cartel related, ranging from kidnappings for ransom to murder.

Not all people have these wants, but the other side does (and there's always another side).... and their just as much people as the ones who don't.
If we regulate it, legitimate business men now get to take advantage of the soils, and the tax's generated from these soils, benifit us all.

Well drugs are illegitimate business for a reason...they're extremely harmful. If a businessman starts growing marijuana (yes I've heard the argument that marijuana is not a harmful drug etc etc. ad naoseum) or coca crops and process the latter to make cocaine...then...he wouldn't be a legitimate businessman anymore, imo.
I think if it IS going to be legalized, whatever drug, and they have to be produced by someone, it should be regulated directly by the government, and not privatized. Bear in mind, these raw materials will not be commercialized (to the general public), but rather supplied to the governmental institute leading the project, if it were to happen in the US or elsewhere.
Any drug production outside of the Governmental program should be considered illegal.

You should all go do some research into the ill effects of morphine and heroin, both derivatives of opium, at the turn of the last century and the effect it had on our country. It will open your eyes. It was legal up until around 1925 I believe.
Most of China's population was addicted to opium before that time.
For a country to legalize it is nuts.

I know heroin is one of the worst drugs you can take. Extremely addictive, very easy to overdose on. Some one in my high school last year was trying to break a heroin addiction . . . painful shit.
