GREAT Ping But Lag
Attention all Computer Geniuses:
I have DSL (I know, cable is better) and get a GREAT ping on TTP. However, since going to 64 slots on BF2, I get a lag that makes me cannon fodder when the server is full.
What would you suggest?
More Memory? (have 1 gig)
Better/Faster Processor? (2 year old Pentium-4)
Faster Graphiocs Card? (128 currently)
Cable Connection?

RE: GREAT Ping But Lag
You aren't the only one; there have been many of us that have experienced lag spikes when the server is full @ 64. I'm sure the admins are looking into how to address the issue. Additionally, it may be through no fault of our own - it is likely we are getting some international euro traffic playing on the server causing the "Problem with connection" phenom.

RE: GREAT Ping But Lag
I can tell you a couple of things.....we have been experiencing some lag spikes...they do smooth out.....Most of the time you get this when you first join round when its loading up...usually because you join game before it finishing loading your stuff.....the server on our end runs lag free even with 64 players.....although I run a x1800 pro with 528 mb ati video card....i wouldn't hurt to have 1.5 or 2 gigs of memory though....
Sometimes the internet has a lag wave........

RE: GREAT Ping But Lag
Matters what kind of "lag" you're getting.
If you're getting the "Holy shit, the game froze" kind of lag, than it's the memory.
I got 1 gig and with all settings maxed out it's sometimes unbearable to play with.
If it's net lag.. I dunno how to fix that.

RE: GREAT Ping But Lag
honestly guys......we've been around the block enough to know it's not net lag....at least not server ISP wide.
if you think you're having net troubles, see if it is JUST YOU, and run a tracert. Insturctions on how to do this can be found in the issues/ideas forum. (a sticky, is there I believe).
Also.......the net comes and goes. If it truly was lagging...so much that you can't fly your plane, enter vehicles, or drive a car.....think...
if this was SERVER WIDE.....how is everyone else flying around? How are people driving past you? How are people shooting you?
Trust us...if the server couldn't handle the traffic, we would see as such in our administration tools. We have a large excess of memory on the server, we have nearly unlimited bandwidth available, and our CPU usage, overall, is less than the usage we are currently running on the CSS/DoDS box.
Now.....does that mean it's definitely not the box......no. But......we have to discect the problem rationally, rather than always assuming it's the server.
The average, even above average rig is not got to run BF2 at decent settings at a high resolution. Not without a nice CPU, a quality g-card, and >1gig of RAM. Nearly every forum, in every gaming site about BF2 is going to tell you this.
The game just........needs a lot of juice to get moving quick. And even with a lot of juice, level loads can take forever, and lag spikes happen.

RE: GREAT Ping But Lag
My System Specs are as follows:
Pentium 4 3.06GHZ w/ Hyperthread which BF2 does like. I have personally tested it out.
1.5 GB of DDR 400
80GB & 40GB 7200 RPM ATA 133
Standard Intel NIC
Up to 10mbps down/512mbps up Internet Connection
ATI Radeon X800XT
So I know I have more then enough machine to run this game."And the hits just keep on coming." - Tom Cruise, A Few Good Men

RE: GREAT Ping But Lag
I thought it was my machine at first but every time I get lag on the server the people in my squad are talking in VOIP about how bad it is too. I play servers of all size and Ive seen this issue on several of them (all of which 64). Some situations accentuate the lag, being in any vehicle, for example, seems to make it a lot worse. Wide open maps also have it worse because of the long draw-distances involved... (compared to a CQC city map environment). But yeah, I hadn't had any lag on TTP before the jump to 64 players.
Stats are as follows:
2GHZ AMD CPU
2GB DDR 3200 RAM
2X SATA HDDs in RAID-0
ATI x800 XT vid card with 256 MB DDR2 RAM.
I run medium settings and get 40-60 FPS on average.
My Ping to the server in-game reports anywhere from 30-60 and ive never seen it higher than 65. Latency isnt the issue, and my net connection tests out clean for dropped packets at all hours day and night...Ill run a tracert later and post the results.
I dont know what the final answer is, but I will say that I have also experienced the lag these folks are talking about and a 64 player server seems much more succeptable to it than, even a 50 player server.
Besides, something about 32 people on a team gets a little unruley. knock off 10 folks per side and that's more like it (IMHO). Big maps with some overhead in player-population = more enjoyable gameplay for me...(again, me and my opinions, they're like assholes I tell you!)
