    Re: True or False....Global Warming

I was simple stating that you guys over reacted to what he said about it. All he said was

So you don't think that acids are naturally occurring? How about pine needles (very acidic, and when they dissolve the acid finds it's way into lakes and streams and evaporated into the atmosphere)...or volcanoes...or countless other things in nature. And how has acid affected climate again?

There is absolutely no solid proof that man has anything to do with the climate. Sure,we need to conserve and find cleaner sources of power (even though we have had the tech for the cleanest power possible, but it is illeagle here thanks to the foresight and vision of Jimmy Carter),but to suggest that man>nature is absurd.

Of which is a true set of statements. The issue has not been proven 100% without a doubt.

Of which you and hawg said

And, of course, you provide absolutely nothing to actually support your view. Just a bunch of hypothetical maybe's. The USGS says you are wrong, though: "Acid rain is a uniquely human-related phenomenon."

To suggest that man has no impact on the patterns of nature is even more absurd. Please do tell how pine needles create acid rain in let's say, Manila, Philippines versus Russia or England.

Of which are misleading. Acid rain is not uniquely human. Of which i have to assume was suggesting that we are the only things that cause acid rain and dex never suggested that man has no impacts on patterns of nature. You guys went to the extreme on the topic. When he was talking about contributing factors.

From what i have read we cant really be over due because there isnt a set pattern. The last one estimated at 740,000 years ago. However it kind of leads to the fact that it would seem to be overdue while your reading it. If you get what i mean.

The pole kept going during the 20th century, north at an average speed of 10 km per year, lately accelerating "to 40 km per year," says Newitt. At this rate it will exit North America and reach Siberia in a few decades.

Claus Fröhlich of the Physikalisch-Meteorologisches Observatorium, Switzerland, will report the latest results from his VIRGO instrument on the ESA-NASA SOHO spacecraft. These show an increase of about 0.1 per cent in visible solar radiation since SOHO was launched in 1995, at the last sunspot minimum.

Not to hot on this one but it leads in that direction. I will continue to try and find the one i was reading.
Nice articles, makes me wonder about applications of the current theories on magnetic currents.
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

It doesn't change the fact that most acid rain is caused by man-made sources. Yes, there are times there can be natural acid rain, but the majority of it is man-made. So while the USGS site may have oversimplified a bit, it was after all an educational part of their site, they were pretty much correct. He was downplaying and writing off man's involvement here, try to make claims that the huge increase we see in acid rain is from pine needles and the like. That is just flat-out wrong.

Uh, wouldn't the amount caused by pine needles and volcanoes have stayed roughly constant over the years, so an increase would have to be from somewhere else?

Exactly. Hence, human activity is the cause. Just look at how much sulfur oxide and nitrous oxides we put out compared to natural sources, too.

The only way that it would hold the prophecy true is if it ends up in the middle east. At least i think thats what i remember the phophecy being. Either way i dont think i'll be holding my breath for anything to happen in 2012. Just gonna be another y2k.

He wasnt downplaying it. He simply made a statement and it was interpreted as down playing it. In either case not really worth debating. Your right man does create acid rain and he was right nature creates acid rain.

And just how, exactly do we know what the acid (as well as other chemicals) levels were before the industrial revolution? And are humans the ONLY thing that has changed over the last 100 years or so? I HIGHLY doubt it.
