My advice to all of you high school and college punks, I mean kids, is to learn to sell. Go get a job selling crap door to door, working in retail, or working on commission. No matter what field you go into you will have to sell yourself, and your ideas. You will start by trying to sell yourself to a potential college, then possibly to a grad school, an internship, a job, a promotion, a better job, maybe investors, etc. Everyone in life is selling, and the better you can sell, be it products, services, ideas, people, whatever the better off you will be in any field in life.

Rudy, as others have said find what you love. I have had several jobs, and have not had a true job for the last 5 years, and the ones i took for fun were always better than the ones I took for the money.

Yeah, my neighbor was talking to me about careers a few weeks ago, and he said no matter what you go into, you have to sell your resume, sell your ideas, and sell your products.

It's easier with the help of the internet today, widening distribution possibilities, but even then, your product still has to be good enough for someone to want to spend their hard-earned money on.

Anyone want to buy a guild wars account? jK! ...or am I?

    Re: Economist vs. Engineer?

If you go the engineering route Rudy, like the others said. Math, science, more math, a little more math, a touch of science, and more math. Learn it, live it, breath it. The better you are at it, and the better you understand it, the better chance you have. Learn how the equations work and how to apply them, not just how to solve them. Take all the math classes your high school has to offer. Even if you don't graduate with a 3.9 GPA, it will pay off down the road. Its a good feeling to be sitting in class thinking to yourself " oh I've seen this before" while everyone else has a look of fear and horror while the prof scribbles on and on.

Also, keep in mind what type of engineering you want to do. Mecahnical is probably the highest in demand. Everyone needs mechanical engineers. And you can work in a variety of fields without overspecializing. But keep in mind you are still a young whipper-snapper. Keep yourself open to discovering new things. Since I have graduated high school I have changed majors 5 times, 3 different colleges, and quit 2 jobs with career potential.

Right now I am a Mech. Engineering major and TAMU-Kingsville. And I think this one is going to stick for me. You gotta find what sticks for you.

    Re: Economist vs. Engineer?

    & Right on Tractor.

I will probably hit TAMU-CC or TAMU-K should I decide to go Engineering. If I get a good scholarship to UTA or UTSA then I will go.

It all depends on where I get my scholarship and how stable I will be. I would rather live at home and have my life taken care of and just continue to go to school than be working part time and struggling to keep up grades.

Be sure though if you do choose engineering, go to school somewhere with an accredited program. TAMU-CC isn't accredited yet. They are working on it though.

Well I would assume they would be by the time I graduate in 2012
