    Computers!

So I've been thinking recently that alot of jobs are low on demand lately, except for one. (Mostly) Anything dealing with computers/technology. Computers are evolving everyday and people need to be there to fix them, install them, make them, make software for them, design hardware for them, etc etc.

So I've decided to learn some stuff about computers, and then maybe going to school for it if I really am interested. So my question is, does anybody know some good reading on the web that would teach me a little bit about computers? Anything at all.

    Re: Computers!

I am a Jr Computer Science Major with a minor in Computer Engineering at a small liberal arts College in Boston. "Computers" is very broad. Some more direct thoughts would be:

    Information Technology
    Web Developement
    System Developement
    Embedded Computers
    Computer Engineering
    Networking/Network Admin
    Computer Repair/Building

phew...that isn't all but a good start. If you have more specific questions about my program at my school feel free to ask, PM me or what have you.

Haha I was hoping someone would narrow it down for me like that. Uh, anyway I could get a brief over-view of what Computer Engineering is? Well, besides engineering, what do they do?

    Re: Computers!

A computer Engineer works with things in both realms of Computers (hard and software). For my minor in CE, I have to take:

    Analog Signals
    Digital Signals
Assembly Language (Intel based at my school)
    Data Communications
    Data Networking
Computer Architecture (how a CPU works)
Embedded Machines (computers in stuff, like your Cell phone, your car, digital thermometers and clocks)
    Disruptive Technologies (RFID)

Computer Engineering at my School is through the electrical engineering department. People with this degree can work at places as one of my room mates does the Nuclear plant. I know my professor worked at Bell Telephone labs (making new phones/caller id back in the day when they were cutting edge), another professor works in routing. Fiber optic networks.

You could also design new CPUs for Intel, or GPUs for Nvid or AMD-ATI. There is a lot of options out there for people with a mixed education in CS/EE

Yeah that sounds like something I'd be interested in.

What should I learn right now in order to get ready for that kind of stuff?

    you in HS?

More or less you got to get yourself into lots of logic classes. Maths, Physics, Bio/Chems

Need to think well to be here. Creativity helps to solve big problems too.

Nope, I'm technically done with highschool. Just have to take these bullshit online courses though before I can go into college (some teachers hated me, but I was able to graduate with less credits than normal).

    Re: Computers!

I think the transition you are talking about wanting to make is pretty large. The best thing to do is take it day by day, course by course because you can't learn it all in a short period of time. Not to mention, if you try it's easy to burn yourself out. First, concentrate on getting INTO the university or college you plan to spend 2-8 years of your life. Choose a major, don't worry about what you choose, you can always change it later on. Take classes you find interesting, make some friends, etc. Before long, it will come to you and you will know exactly what you want to do.
