CHL or NOT, My experience
So I finally decided to take the class. Worst 11 hours of my life spent on a saturday. To me, the class was boring but that could be because I've had numerous gun related classes, military, scouts, hunters education, etc. Gun safety isn't a new thing to me. Anyhow, the class I took was with www.texashandgunacademy.com. I didn't really know what to expect to pay for with my $110. So I went and found out.
$110 pays for:
2 passport photos
2 sets of digital fingerprint scans
background check
shooting test with 50 rounds: 20 at 3 yards, 20 at 7 yards, and 10 at 14 yards.
An easy test of 50 questions
and of course, all the filled out paperwork required for a CHL to be sent in by you with a check for $140.
Anyhow, the instructor wasn't the best teacher when it came to him covering the gun laws and such. He kinda breezed over the basics but spent the most time on where we can't take our guns. That, of course, being new stuff I haven't seen before. Just before he started covering that stuff, I was reading through the statute and explicitly read that you CANNOT take your gun into a church, synogogue, or other religious institution. When he started covering that material, he said that we can. I asked him why the statute says we can't, he said that the statute says somewhere in there that we can but he'll cover that later. 5 hours later I went up to him to show him, he said, "it's in there somewhere, i'll cover that later." I started to feel like the instructor was a little bit full of it. Overall, I felt like the $110 should have paid for more other than the photo, shooting test, digital fingerprint scanning, etc because I can read the statute myself than listen to that guy. Any thoughts or questions?

I hold a CHL. Mine cost $20 and there was no class to take. Was this a required class or elective? I have never taken a training class of any kind other than hunters safety when I was 15.
I do not pay much attention to the small statutes. I pay attention to signage and the big ones like court rooms and such. Not that you would every make it into one of those with a gun these days. As far as the small ones. First of all it is suppose to be concealed. So if it is concealed no one is going to know you have it. The only way they would know if you have it is if you had to use it. In that case who gives a fuck about a statute.
The class you took sounds very basic and would probably be ok for someone that were new to hand guns.

Re: CHL or NOT, My experience
I've had a CCL for a few years now....
i don't remember exactly what i paid.....maybe $150? It was much of the same, but we had a 2 hour question and answer period which was more informative than anything else.I learned quite a bit from it.
We have the same BS signs here in Mn. I have yet to comply. They talk tough here, but the most they can do to you is ask you to leave.....if you don't,they can call the cops and give you a $25 trespassing fine. :P

I've also had one for about a year. I'm not sure as to the value of the class or the material, because in Texas, like in most other states, you can already carry a gun almost anywhere, without a license.
You can already carry at home, in your car (of course) but can potentially carry anywhere anyway due to the second amendment.....our instructor started out the class with a comment on how he thought the whole thing was a joke, and that there should be (or is, or will be) almost no restriction on where one can carry concealed or exposed once the lawyers just have press hard enough.
I guess that's America for you.
You can't see breasts in a PG-13, but hacking off arms are ok.
You can't have a couple of the same sex stick a penis in a butt, but you can blast a "threat" anywhere.
You've got unabashed violence all over our forums, but the filters only becaome a threat if we talk about "weed".
What a joke.
I carry, I wish I didn't "have" to......and I think it's generally a sad state of affairs that we do have to arm ourselves as we do.
