That looks like a lot of the typical recent automobile molding I've seen. Remember when the Chevy Avalanche came out? The plastic on those things got all weird looking.
I'm betting it's sun damage and it's a weakness of the plastic, chemically.

Re: black on my truck fading
Your best bet might be to paint it, I know they have some good paint that covers plastic well now, might try looking around to see how much that is. It isn't as hard to spray paint with an actual spray (not a rattle can) as most folks think and it would last longer than all those oily deals. You would have to clean it with soap and water first and let it dry, but with summer coming on it is probably the best time to do it. It will also let you inspect under the liner to make sure there isn't any rust in the bed.

Re: black on my truck fading
it's a truck get over it.... well at least thats my opinion. Sorry my truck is an 89 with 290k and has typical chevy blowoff paint. I dont care it's a truck and it gets me places.
My thoughts would be to scrub with soap and water and put a sealer on it. The sealer may get back the black and keep it from going back in a couple weeks.
oh and its a ford thats your first problem :P

Cool idea:
know those spray in bedliners?
They make kits for you to do it yourself at home.....we did it to my dad's jeep.
It's been years and it's still black as can be, and has a better/rougher texture than ANY professional spray-on I've seen!
they're fairly cheap, and protect the metal under the bed cover very well.

Yeah, I see your problem there...
You need to man up and buy a Chevy! :10
(Says the guy who just bought a Toyota Highlander now that he's got kids, and mourns the fact that the p/u has been parked at the bottom of the driveway for "dirty jobs." :3)
