Before you respond with macdonald douglas built the harrier let me say this. They took the av-8a from Britain and redesigned it here for our use. My father worked at macdonald douglas and did the electrical for this particulas aircraft. I still have the vhs from the av-8b's first 3 vertical take off's and the first 6 ramp jumps. They did not redisn the engine there was no need to due to the rolls royce engine served our purpose just fine.

Per unit cost always includes R&D costs. Like I said before, the Navy and Marines plan to buy 680 F-35B/Cs. When you buy that many, the R&D costs are distributed between each unit, making the per unit cost right around where I said: Currently about $80 million, with hopes of getting it down to $50 million. Granted, the per unit cost will be extremely high if we only buy the ones that Congress has paid for. But that's not the plan.

The plan is to replace the Marine Corps AV-8B and F/A-18C with one platform. The plan is to replace the Navy's F/A-18A+/Cs with a newer, more capable aircraft. In the case of the Marines (which is what we are talking about) that means you have one airframe instead of two. It means that you only have to train crews to work on one aircraft, instead of two. That means more manpower is available to do a job. It means that you only have to buy replacement parts for one aircraft, instead of two. That means less money spent specializing with one aircraft or another, and more common parts available as replacements. That saves money and makes logistics easier for the Corps.

I know all that i simply stated that the harrier is a really good platform to begin with and it would be considerably cheaper to update it verses the money being spent on the 35.

Look deathgodusmc, I'm not trying to criticize you or your plane. But I am going to call you out on pulling these numbers right out of your ass. I know a heck of a lot about this stuff; obviously you know more about day to day operations with the Harrier, but that doesn't mean you know everything.

You said right there that we have spent $111 billion on the development of the F-35. Development costs are estimated to be $40 billion dollars. Although we paid a significant portion of that, many other nations around the world contributed to that. We are not the only people paying for this project. And the Navy, Marines, and Air Force plan to eventually buy more than 2000 of the planes. This is not like the F-22; the whole idea of the Joint Strike Fighter is to have a highly capable, yet economical 21st century stealth aircraft at a reasonable price for our air services, as well as our allies.

The USMC likes aircraft that use the same airframes, look at the super cobra and the new huey, both share many of the same components yet do different roles.

The harrier just can't fill as many roles as this one new aircraft can. Hopefully this new bird lives up to the hype.

Please go back and read what I wrote. I am absolutely positive that you will find that I just wrote that other countries contributed to the R&D funding. And, unfortunately, if you took the time to do some research before you posted you would also have learned that the total R&D is estimated to cost $40 billion dollars, and that includes our money and our partners.
