I have police officers in my class from time to time just finishing up, and my school offers online classes all the way up to a master's degree I believe. There are many options, don't just choose a path and stick to it, keep you options open and look for anything that can help you.
an A.S. in CJ is worthless......unless you work out with the dept to pay for the rest of your schooling like Powercock says. That is always a + that comes with many agencies. Texas State is implementing a Ph.D program in criminal justice starting Fall '09.
my friends going to community collage for CJ in his senior year of high school, then at collage hes going to get something els. community collage=save money=free creds

Yeah you can look at it that way. When people I know who go to community college describe it to me, the types of assignments, the lazy attitude of most of the teachers and how the class is run, makes me think that they aren't going to be the least bit prepared to enter another school, especially at the junior level, which is what you have to reach to transfer here locally. If they haven't learned the proper skills early on, they are going to fail at upper level courses. I'm not saying this is a universal experience at all, but I just don't trust them.

    Collage? Are you serious?

If your interested in law enforcement even just a little see if your police department has a civilian observer/ride along program. If you are not hooked after going on a ride or to then there is a chance you won't like the job. Many departments offer ride alongs and I've done 3 of them and loved every minute of it. It gives you a chance to see the job not only the kickass exciting parts but the dull boring parts as well. It really gives you a sense of what your in for and is a great experience.

Another great idea. Didn't even think of that, it's a good way to get a feel for what they do, plus it's not like an internship where you probably have to do papers, etc.

I don't believe that's true. We are recruited right out of college by the FBI (20-23 yo).

Well, the only reason I say that is that my cousin grad from the Citadel in Military Intelligence and they told him he had to wait until he was 23.

    Edit: From the FBI website.

To become an FBI Special Agent you must be a U.S. citizen or a citizen of the Northern Mariana Islands. You must be at least 23 years of age, but younger than 37 upon your appointment as a Special Agent.

ahh I see...That is to be a special agent. Not all jobs with the FBI require you to be 23...
other jobs with the FBI only require you to be 21. Nice catch though...was not aware of that age restriction.

    Re: Law Enforcement?

I think it's part of their attempt to further tighten their restrictions on hiring so that they don't get so many people applying

BTW, I'm doing an internship this summer with my local PD helping with a Civilian Police Academy for teens 14-17, teaches about the police and also team building and the like. Two weeks, I get to see the jail, mounted patrol, swat, narcotics, homicide, etc. Also, I get to schedule a ride along with one of the busier divisions for a Saturday 4pm-midnight shift in a few weeks, REALLY looking forward to that.
