Re: Should the U.S end its embargo on Cuba?

There are many Cubans who support the embargo and are part of the Cuban-American Lobby in both Florida and DC.

Personally I want to see more of a push by the current government of Cuba to help it's own people more instead of us doing the pushing. Right now we have more in this country to worry about than an embargo, so I see it as a 'later' thing that we can get to after our own economy is stabilized.

The US isn't the only place in the world that Cuba can import things from so the situation there is not the fault of the US but that of the current Cuban government. Once that government changes for the better or makes steps to ask for actual help and not just an embargo lift, I could see talks starting for a lift of it.

I feel for folks that want to go back and visit, but they can now if they have family there, so that argument to lift the embargo is null. Hopefully the country can become a democracy in the end.

Trade is beneficial if you can offer something the other does not. Cheap products is something the US couldn't offer and why China filled this void and beat a lot of our companies with their lower pay and standards for workers. Cuba doesn't have much to export here and the US is still it's fifth largest importer globally, which shows that their country as a whole is fubared and not related to our embargo anyway.

aww Jason nice attempt there buddy proud of you truly.

They still have an aggressive hostile to America dictator in power , that's why we leave it in place.

as soon as that is gone we lift the ban and enjoy the fruits of cuba.
that is what i am saying,

as far as the saying goes... i just couldn't resist that little zinger.

and for the record if i thought you were dumb as dirt we wouldn't be having this conversation I would just ignore you.

As you stated, civil makes a good point. Additionally, the essence of capitalism is the free market place of trade along with the free market of ideas. Why not show Cuba all the advantages of free trade and capitalism by exchanging goods and ideas. Capitalism thrives because it can withstand any opposition in the free market of ideas, not because of the forced embargo. Additionally trade can build a friendly relationship, neither cuba nor the US seek approval of how their governments are run - so why cant we all get over it and trade.

ECON 101 - Trade is beneficial to everyone, otherwise no one would participate.

DING DING DING WE HAVE A WINNER!!

The events leading to the trade embargo all happened in the 1950s and '60s. The trade embargo has been in full effect for 40 years. So far, it has not worked to punish Castro, undermine his government or cause a popular revolution against the dictator. The American corporations that suffered economic losses in the early 1960s -- when Castro's government nationalized their businesses -- have all gone on to exploit the people and resources of developing nations around the globe and do not even miss the monopolies they had in Cuba. The Soviet Union, the real enemy in the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, has since crumbled, found democracy and is now a trading partner of the United States. Anti-socialism can hardly be used as a good excuse for continuing the embargo following the collapse of communism in Russia and Eastern Europe and taking into account our socialist friend to the north.

So what purpose does the trade embargo serve? If we want Cubans to be more democratic, then why do we continue to isolate them from their closest neighbor and the most powerful democracy in the world? If we want them to adopt the ideals of capitalism and free-market economies, then why do we prohibit them from interacting with the wealthiest economy in the world? If we desire a free-market economy within the country, then we should let them have a free-market economy, which would have to include economic ties to their neighbors, including the United States.

Ok after 40 years it hasn't accomplish much.

Cuba is still communist, One of many Castros is still in power, and We still have people illegal running to Miami.

Lift the embargo, open trade relations, legalize and tax the fuck out of the Illegal Cuban Immigrants.

Maybe we will get some cheap Cigars and porn out of it.

This thread proves that McCarthyism is alive and kicking in modern America. Ignorance is bliss.

Interesting take. I suppose it could mean that. Although I think it mostly is a pride thing.
