My vote is an 870, can't go wrong with the most sold and copied shotgun in the world. I have an express magnum with a 20 and 28 inch barrels. It has never failed me.

I have asked several friends, and they are split 50/50. I almost pulled the trigger, pardon the pun, on a sweet 870 Sunday, but had to leave before I could.

They are great platforms to learn the basics and much much more. I miss my 10/22 soooooooo much. Put some decent money into it too, but sold it around this time last year. Atleast, I get to see it every now and then since I sold it to a close friend.

Hogue stock, fluted barrel, bipod, blackhawk cheek pad, BSA scope, and some paint...

Nice, got two of them myself. I have one SSw/laminate reg.carbine stock and the other SSw/laminate full length manlicher stock.

My vote is 870, personally, but I have heard amazing things about both guns. I have fired both and the 870 seemed to shoot a little softer...a good recoil pad, and that would be the case on either I suppose.

The 870 Super Mag would handle all the 3.5 inch shells you would feed it...not that you would ever need them...and so would the Mossy 835.

If you are getting it for home defense, either works - but I would consider a Mossberg 500 Tactical before a full sized hunting version of the 835.

Will this gun be taken to the shooting clay's range, the duck blind, or both? or will it lean in the closet waiting for a bad guy to make your day with the occasional trip to the range?

Probably a little bit of everything, and we can't forget the impending zombie apocalypse.

    Re: New toy

we got a mossberg 500 tactical marine....basically, everything in it, and I mean EVERYTHING IN IT is covered in nickel so it's rust and corrosion PROOF!

it's called the marine cause it's made to sit on a boat in salt water conditions for years at a time, forgotten about until you need to pull it out and rely on it to shoot.

We only got it cause my uncle got a newer/better one and sold this one to my dad.....it's been sitting under my dad's bed since.

I'm more worried about the shells in it degrading past usable-status before the gun wouldn't shoot them.....
