Gawd I love this plane. It is the one that got me hooked on flying as a kid.

There is a story about an air traffic controller that talked with one. The story goes something along the line of the SR-71 requesting altitude change to flight level 650 (65,000 ft above sea level). The controller replied that if he could get that high he could have it. The SR-71 came back that he would be descending from FL 850 (85,000 ft above sea level). :6

It is an amazing bird.

The body panels actually swell up as it approaches speed. It leaks fuel until it is airborne and moving fast, at which point it gets refueled. Freakin' amazing... Almost a spaceship.

...wow...to survive something like that must have been crazy...no wonder the helicopter pilot was rushing, I'd be doing the same if someone just fell out of the sky in front of me too.
