tor?ture??/?t?rt??r/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [tawr-cher] Show IPA noun, verb, -tured, -tur?ing.
–noun 1. the act of inflicting excruciating pain, as punishment or revenge, as a means of getting a confession or information, or for sheer cruelty.
2. a method of inflicting such pain.
3. Often, tortures. the pain or suffering caused or undergone.
4. extreme anguish of body or mind; agony.
5. a cause of severe pain or anguish.
By definition it kind of meets number 4 but overall i would say no by definition it is not torture.

Re: Is waterboarding torture?
Waterboarding isnt torture.Beheading people(like Daniel Pearl) is torchure.Id waterboard the fuck out of terrorists or worse. It would be as easy as washing my hands.Ive lost acouple friends in this war on terror and have no feelings towards them.I hear stories from other friends still active and wish death to all the terrorists and anyone that supports them I !.

Waterboarding probably is torture, and maybe even cruel and unusual, but the bigger question is are we allowed to break the rules to combat those who have no rules? Or what are the rules when fighting a cell/sect/group and not a true nation? Al Qaeda, Hamas, whomever are not members of the UN, so how can UN sanctions and agreements apply? Not saying I support or oppose it, but just food for thought.

Re: Is waterboarding torture?
I think Civil hit the nail on the head, the question shouldnt be what is torture, the question should be what level of torture is acceptable for us to use? Psy Ops uses the sound of children screaming, mothers wailing, etc to soften an enemy. Is that torture? Im sure at some level it is, and its used all the time. Even a vanilla interrogation can last days, sleep deprivation being the primary goal, is that torture? Again, used quite frequently, and Im sure by some definition its torture.
My opinion is that if it doesnt leave physical scars or turn them into drooling Roonts I say use it. If it saves one life, I think its worth it. Waterboarding is likely terrifying, but it doesnt do either of what I mentioned. It probably makes them terrified of any puddle of water, but I can live with that.
