Sorry bruce, but most furnaces that Ive installed always have the filters inline with the cold air return. The air is filtered before entering the furnace.Air filters should not restrict alot of flow in the first place.Sure they are designed to alittle but not enough tocause issues.
I'm confused, it seems like you are saying the same thing.

Well here in Florida most return air ducts are in the ceiling and are just a grate with no filter. It may be different in other parts of the country. My filter is located at the air handler/furnace like in the pciture.

The filter is never in the return duct. It's always in the return air handler of the blower unit.

I'll pit my backyard mechanic skillz against your state license any day and in any technology.

Re: Who is the house A/C expert here?

    Jester,

Let's reconcile this one step at a time.

First, to "pit" is to challenge. As in gladiators.

pit: set into opposition or rivalry; "let them match their best athletes against ours"; "pit a chess player against the Russian champion"; "He plays his two children off against each other"
Second, your english should be capitalized, to wit, English.

Third, we are so close to agreement that we are fighting over a word that has not been spoken. Return air register.

Can we agree that return registers don't have filters?

I will say every house that I know has had a filter at the air handler, but I have seen the filters at the return ducts also along with the air handler. I know 2 people including my Dad's house that have multiple filters along with the air handler filter.

    Ninja,

How big are the houses that have multiple filters? I can visualize such a configuration with > 30,000 ft^3, but I would also be surprised if anyone living like that played on TTP and stuck around. IMO only one person on TTP lived like that and it taint me.

Re: Who is the house A/C expert here?

The ones i have seen with multiple filters were done by the owner so to speak to keep the condensor in the air handler from getting dirty.

My air handler has the blower motor on the bottom pushing air across the condensor to cool the house. The filter is still on the bottom of the handler. The heater however is below the blower motor so it doesnt get put out(gas).

Car ac's i know houses I was forced to learn about this year. My ac kept freezing up so i was forced to open the handler and clean the condensor. This of course was after i determined the unit and charge were both good. All this because i refuse to sit in a house at 84 degrees when it should be 73.
