    Ford F150 A/C

I'm starting to smell this antifreeze smell whenever I run the A/C in my truck. It's not constant, I've only smelled it like three times on three different drives and it was for a very short period. Yesterday I drove for 40 miles straight and for 5 seconds I hit the gas to pass someone and I smelled it during the acceleration. The rest of the trip I didn't smell it. A co-worker told me it sounds like my A/C is about to go bad.

Yup, my Bronco did the same thing before the AC died. Take it in and have it charged, sometimes it seems to do that when it is low on freon. If you know how to charge it yourself you might do that.

a/c system and coolant stem are two completely separate systems. They have only 1 common factor. The blower motor pushes air into the vehicle. Your heater core is probably going bad.

I forgot to put in there if your smelling antifreeze get it fixed. Antifreeze fumes are toxic when concentrated like inside the cab of a vehicle. I'm not saying your going to die toxic but it will make you very nauseas after a while.

The check your passanger floor board trick doesn't work on the model year you have unless it's a big gapping hole. Little heads up for you. I'm not 100 % on this but if my memory serves me correctly that model is the same as the explorer from that year.

Meaning you have to take the whole inside apart to get to the heater core. I mean everything the dash board is coming out. 1200 dollar repair for a 40 dollar problem but like i said i'm not 100% on the part it is just like the explorer for that year.

If you feel the freon is weak, then it is because you lost freon, then there is a leak, not because it "lost it's charge". Feon doesn't "lose it's charge".

Same thing. It's called charging the system when freon is added and reffered to as losing it's charge when it's leaking.

I've never seen an AC on an older vehicle that didn't leak a little either....

Check all the ac hoses under the hood and see if any of the lines or surrounding areas are wet.Check the area all around the compressor for wetness that will be where the leak is if its in a visible area. Also if its leaking antifreeze check the water pump area if the bearing goes bad the bushing inside the pump will leak also check heater and radiator hoses for leaks especially around exhaust manifold as the antifreeze may be splashing at speed onto it.

Most vehicles it's just the valves that are leaking. There like 5 bucks a piece plus freon of course to fix. But if you take it in to get it checked you bet your ass your going to need more parts than those 2 valves to fix it.

    Re: Ford F150 A/C

    It's a 2001 XL model with the V6.

My co-worker who said it sounds like the A/C system is about to go bad said the same thing happened to him. He ended up fixing it himself and that on his it had something to do with a heater core hose. He simply reconnected it somehow or bypassed something, who knows, I don't know how it works and I didn't catch everything he said....
