So if there is a whole "backbone" that is vulnerable,......... Yet it is bad that the government would want to be able to protect itself from those vulnerabilities, should there be a cyberattack?

1st amendment covers my right to surf the internet? Are you fucking kidding me? Let's see. Patriot Act infringes on civil liberties like the right to privacy, and in some cases Habeas Corpus. Whereas all I see in this bill is that in cases of cyber attacks that threaten our national security, the govt switches those channels off.... I don't see the connection. Does it state that they can monitor every keystroke that I make? Does it say anything about monitoring at all? Brucey, what rights are being infringed by this proposal from Sen. Rockefeller? Or are you just crying for crying's sake?

People wonder why i hate republicans more then democrats, and this forum often provides the reasons.
1.) I didn't realize that Olympia Snow was a republican....

2.) Nobody wonders why you hate republicans, they just point it out when you bang your paper independent drum.

3.) I can't say that I oppose the measure, it would be hypocritical of me, since I was a supporter of the Patriot act, and it reads to be born of the same logic. Drastic measures to ensure security.

Read into it, it appears to be setup to avoid being helpless in the event of a cyber attack, which sounds like steps to protect the homeland. Hats off to them for having the guts to forsee this and act. Hopefully the measure will have some protections in it to avoid abuse.

That said, you cut off the internet, its game over for your administration, and party if you use it for any other reason than to defend the homeland. People will be in the streets. So I dont forsee anyone abusing it.

The big question is whether the Messiah's drones will have the courage to protest this the same way they have protested the Patriot Act.

Shit, cut off the internet for even 15 minutes and I'm not sure the Army and Marines combined could handle the onslaught of angry WoW nerds converging on the White House.

You have to remember Hawg, in the new Republican party anyone who is a moderate or isn't to the far right=Democrat.

It makes sense now why McCain couldn't win in 2000 or 2004, he was really a democrat

The Backbone and the DNS servers people have mentioned are very well protected. They experience thousands of cyberattacks each year and keep on running.

If someone managed to take them down, it would be quite a feat. Go do some digging on cyber attacks and you'll find that North Korea has been launching attacks at us for years.

Shutting down the web is impossible. It was DESIGNED so it wouldn't be taken down. Taking down one route would only temporarily slow it down. In seconds the info would be rerouted and notifications sent of lost info. In a moment the networks would realign themselves.

Take into effect the ISP's. THEY can shut down which will shut millions off from the internet.

But aren't there some bottlenecks in the system where shutting down 20 or 30 networks would have a cascade effect ?
Doesn't this bill effect private networks ?
If so, doesn't that mean that by the time they went to take the private networks, all the government ones would be already down or under control ?

BTW: Senator Snowe is not just a "moderate", she is one of just 3 that crossed the aisle to vote for the stimulus.

Your above statement makes me have to ask this question... do you believe that when a law is passed, no matter what it is, even if it hurts millions of people, if its bad.... do you believe that is still right? Do you believe that is American? And do you believe that just because the govt is "in charge" that they can do what ever the fuck they want and get away with it?

    tyranny man... wake up...
