Coast Guard
Alright guys...I've been mulling over joining the coast guard for atleast a year now, and the two biggest things that were holding me back were school and my mom.
Well, I've since basically dropped outta going to school, and I'm workin on the mom to bring her to my side......her only concern is the basic training. She doesn't think I'd be able to handle it.
Y'see, I'm severely ADHD (whether you believe in it or not) and have always had "authority issues" all my life. She read an article or something stating that ADHD kids have a problem with going on suicide watch at military training.....
Well, if I join, my plan is to go to A-school to be a gunnersmate...with my passion for small arms it seemed like a good fit :-P
What are y'alls experiences with the military? What branch, how did you handle basic, and do you consider your experience as a whole to be rewarding?

Re: Coast Guard
I have very seriously considered the coast guard because of the rescue ops. I could get open water rescue and such, alot of my family and friends are involved with hurricane response so joining in on that through the coast guard would be cool. I read up on it and there basic training is more classroom than any other branch. I have a lot of incident command training which the coast guard uses on all operations. Loving firefighting, the coast guard has the most related jobs. Yes you can be deployed overseas. IDK it looks good... I just need to go for it.

Re: Coast Guard
I believe E-5 is sergeant in the army, although...I think they call E-6 and E-7 sergeant as well just to shorten up the real rank, staff sergeant and gunnery sergeant. Correct me if I'm wrong. I was in the Marine corps for 5 years and you'd be in trouble if you called an E-6(staff sergeant) or an E-7(gunnery sergeant) just plain sergeant.
I always thought that the coast guard was cool but I don't know much about them. I think it would be a great experience.
I don't believe in ADHD, mainly because it only exists in the US and no other countries, just doesn't seem right that a disorder exists in only one country. I think everyone has a problem with authority, we just all need to learn when to keep our mouths shut and do what we are told until we are given the same authority.

When I first saw the title I kind of chuckled.
They are like the black sheep of the military family. But they do some good stuff like rescue people. Something I could never do.
Spaz, don't worry about Basic. You're mom is just being, well, your mom. Hell when I told my mom I was going to enlist, her face was priceless. Basic won't be hard. All you have to do is not think and follow orders.
