Here we go. To me it sounds something like reverse diabetes..instead of your body not making something it needs, your body makes something, but then can't use it.

really, this case needs to be examined....there are other chemical/hormonal differences between males and females (oh god, I hated phys/anatomy in HS) that could and would give her an advantage naturally.
They need to see if she has this advantage....

I agree Spaz, and I'm sure they are, to avoid lawsuits and such, but I hope they keep it out of the news. For her sake, for her family's and for any other kids out there.

As for competition, apparently, though her body produces testosterone, it can't use it..so there's no advantage in competition from that standpoint (which would be any opposition's only leg to stand on.) She gets no benefit from it, unlike the female bodybuilders who inject testosterone to bulk up. Yes, she has more muscle mass and she's taller, but since when do we pull people out of competitions because they're taller or bulkier?

Effectively, according to the experts, she's a gal with a birth defect, and one that's rare, but not as much as we'd like it to be. This is one of the reasons they stopped routinely testing people for these competitions. People raise a stink to fight against the possibility of a man knowingly passing himself as female to have an unfair advantage, something that has only happened once in all the recorded Olympics. Once they proved that wasn't the case, they should have dropped it, and are supposed to.

Thankfully, the comments I've been reading on the sports pages have not made it here...they sicken me, and remind me how easy it is to be a douchebag when you think you're protected by the internet.

The last athlete who had a similar case made public, killed herself. Can't these sports commissions learn from their mistakes?
So lets say your a female athlete that has trained all your life and have made it to the Olympics and your beaten by someone with a unfair advantage whether artificial or natural you're gonna say oh well my tuff luck I wasn't born hermaphrodite. I don't think so :5

I find it difficult to believe that someone incapable of absorbing testosterone would be alive, much less in good physical shape. But perhaps I should read the article before I judge.

This whole story makes me sick. I can't believe that they would leak details that would crush someone like that.

Artificial, I would raise holy hell. I think natural advantages are something every athlete deals with and will continue to do so, that's like being a sore loser because someone was taller than you on the high jump. She's bigger and heavier..and she has to carry it, I don't. She's also most likely going to have serious medical complications, that I don't. (or wouldn't if I was an athlete instead of an avowed non-athlete) Yes, it's one that's relatively new, but that doesn't make it any less true. As science progresses we are going to learn new things, and attitudes and widespread beliefs are going to have to change. The controversy is stemming from the medical professionals who are stating that there is no "unfair" advantage, and the people who want to believe there is regardless.

Should they have released full details of the medical records of an 18 year old? No.

Should said 18 year old be allowed to compete against females with at least a portion of male plumbing? Tough call, but if so then why not me, or any other dude?

Not to be crude, but if the doctors prove that it doesn't give her an advantage..then it's like running with a tumor, or a third nipple. It's medical science versus long-held belief.

You on the other hand, Sybil, have all the plumbing, and I'm assuming the ability to use your hormones, cuz well, you're not a girl.

Disclaimer: I am of course assuming all of this about Civil, I have not looked, nor do I care to.

Ok, and I say so what. I am sure by that argument I could say it is fair if my body only naturally produces the testosterone levels of an average female even if I am 100% male. If being male gives me no advantage then why have separate sports for guys and girls? If being 100% male gives me an advantage over someone 100% female then wouldn't being 50% male give half that advantage?
