That's why we have legal age requirements for pretty much everything. A 15 year old's brain isn't even fully developed yet.

I didn't say it was not wrong. I just don't think the punishment fits. It was consensual, not forced.

I think dismissal would have been more appropriate. Just my opinion.

My point is that a 15 year old is not capable of making a decision such as this. They lack complete information and mental capacity. The law (and subsequent punishment) implies that an adolescent is not capable of making a consensual sex decision. Pedophiles talk 10 year olds on MySpace into "consensual" sex all the time. It's illegal for a reason.

The punishment seems to fit rather well.

Made the choice to be gay? That is an absolutely ignorant statement. Sorry, you may believe it is a choice but by doing so you choose to ignore what empirical data points to. Also, it is very likely she may not be sure of her sexuality due to her not being fully developed. It is accepted in behavioral sciences and psychology that people around her age can very often be unsure of their sexuality due to the fluctuations and surges of hormones.

Some kids hit puberty at 10 to 12 years old, yet that doesn't mean that they are old enough to make adult decisions.

See... being an Education (almost) major I can see the issue here.

It isn't that a woman had sex with a minor. It's that a teacher did it.

When parents send their kids off to school they have the right to expect that the teachers aren't looking to get into sexual relationships with their pupils. The school has the right to expect that their staff aren't screwing the students.

The quote from the parents of the girl says it all "Under the guise of helping her we now understand that for over five months she was betraying our trust and our daughter's"

As for the jail time... I dunno, I agree that it seems a little excessive. Probabbly the parents hired some rich, fancy pants lawyer and went whole hog on the prosecution. I mean they asked that the teacher be labeled a sex offender...
