Trades and purchases from crudlist, pawn shops, and a monthly music swap meet. Sometimes a music store if I know I can quickly flip it. I bring in a couple instruments each week. I have a partner that actually does the buying and trading in person. I just clean them up and sell them or offer them back out on another trade. We split everything 50/50.
It started out as just a little fun thing on the side, but we have been able to get our hands on some really nice and cool gear lately. We try to search for gear around the $1000-1500 mark and make between $300-500 profit after all expenses, fees, repairs, etc. that we run across. We have yet to take out any cash from our proceeds, so we are currently sitting on about $10k of profit from over the last year. We like the cash on hand so we can snag up gear when it becomes available. We are taking advantage of the poor economy. People want CASH, and if you can deliver it the same day, they are likely willing to bend.
I used to do vintage hand wired amps, mainly. I learned how to read the schematics, fix and replace most things, and then sell the amps for a good profit. That market slowed, and I hated packing/shipping amps, so eBay was out. Selling guitars is much easier.

Gibson Explorer (2004) just came in today. It has upgraded pickups.. EMG JH Series... James Hetfield ($240 set). The guitar is in great shape for being 9 years old. Paid $550... after expenses it should bring about $250 in profit.

The Explorer sold in 1 hour and 20 minutes for $895. I had it listed at $929. I got $320 more than I paid for it and should end up with $240 in my pocket. Not bad for 2 hours worth of work. I also sold the PRS for $1629, which was $429 more than what I paid for it. After expenses/fees, I got $290 in my pocket, and all I had to do was change the strings!
I have a couple other leads and will likely get some new gear in the next couple of days, but I will likely just put up another topic as I don't want to flood this one.
