So... Texas...
San Antonio, Texas Coast, what're the cities like? Universities, Junior Colleges? Health care stuffs, safety for elderly, job market (Apprenticeships for Trades? Electrician, Plumbing?), standard of living, the whole she-bang? Reason I ask, is my mother is getting close to her retirement and the two aforementioned are two places shes contemplating moving too. It'll be too expensive to remain here in California, and frankly a change of scenery is needed. And I'll be damned if I let myself stay in California when I have nothing anchoring myself here.

With y'all coming from Cali, I have to recommend that you check out Austin.
The Texas-shock will be almost invisible there. Lotso open-minded thinkers, Musicians, outdoor things, bars, medical, universities a plenty...
You can't go wrong starting your hunt in A-Town. Ask Faith, she lives there and so do several other TTP-ers.
Good Luck!

Austin is most certainly the closest to non Texas available. My roommate is from Cali and they hated Austin because they wanted to be out of California. They were there on a day that they had a gay pride parade I believe.
