Actually that bow was a total blunder. First, non-asians shouldn't give more then a very slight bow. Non-asians don't have the years of etiquitte and heritage to do it correctly and they [asians] view it as an insult to bow incorrectly. Second... bowing lower then the person you are greeting is a sign of submission.

Which ever aid/consultant... etc. that suggested he do that should be fired.

Our Japanese agents don't see it that way. They respect non-Asians who bow and don't hold them to the same rules. They see the jester of trying greater than the form. When visiting Japanese clients we all bow to show respect for their culture. When they visit here they all do handshakes.
