Both my kids and I got the flu, but we all had the normal flu vaccine. The actual H1N1 typing was not run because A) the test costs $350 to run, per patient and B) the CDC was (at the time) over a month backlogged with tests. It's a pretty good assumption it was H1N1, because it is so widespread in Texas.

Ok, for all you bad ass's out there that think the swine flu is a hoax listen up.
There is a BIG difference between swine influenza, avian influenza, Influenza, and Influenza A. The differences can be seen in the symptons, the people it affects, and the genetic make up of the illness. The worst flu you ever had growing up was most likely Influenza A. This is the flu you get where you are vomiting, pooping, headaches, fever, respitory distress, and all around AGONY. Iam talking, Orange Juice, Jerry Springer, a couch, and a trash can.
The big scare with Swine Flu (H1N1, unlike bird flue) is it does not attack the weak. Swine flu is attacking the strong. When you get sick, your body builds up anti-bodies to whatever illness you get, and therefore, your body fights off most infections during flu season. Except now, its a new ball game. H1N1 is a totally new strain of flue for us humans, and there is no way (other than the shot or mist) to combat it. People who get H1N1 without having a vaccine, tend to have SEVER fevers. I have seen some cases where tempratures have risen upwards of 106 degrees...In perfectly healthy 25-30 year olds.
I was the same way you guys were when this all happend. "It's just the fucking flu! God theses people are stupid" Until the chief of my fire departments son got it real bad and barely made it, and that 14 year old cheerleader died from it.
It's not the sniffles, its not the vomiting. ITS THE FEVER! We do not have the drugs to control the fever as of now. Imagine your car engine with no coolant, and you are drving it from main to california. Humans are over heating, and as of now, we cant control that.
Take it seriously, wash your hands, live your life, get the shot, and do the best you can not to be someone who spreads the disease. Because everything is funny, until your child get's it.

Re: Have you had Swine Flu?
Kraker,
It was my understanding that the mortality rate of the common flu and H1N1 are roughly the same. But that, like you said, it is an equal opportunity killer; instead of taking the old, young and infirm it affects all age and health ranges (because of the fever). It was also my understanding that one of the problems with swine flu is that it is easy to catch if you are exposed because it is so new.

With the new strain, comes a new illness. ANd yes, the fever is the biggest problem with the swine flu. Severe fever's can lead to Heart attacks, pericardial problems, strokes, high blood pressure, and numerous other things that can be serious. Fever's associated with true swine flu can be extremely painful and deadly. If you get the chance, get the shot, young or old...
