    Salary range?

So I am graduating college this semester (December 20th to be exact) with a BS in Business administration with a minor in management and a minor in accounting (not spectacular, I know).

I currently do accounting (bookkeeping) work for a particular restaurant in the French Quarter. I basically take care of A/R, A/P, all the record keeping, etc...(soon I will be in charge of the companies payroll as well)
I "work under" a CPA who basically just oversees everything I do and handles all the big to do accounting decisions.

My experience only includes working at a local tax firm (CPA with 2 other employees) for about 10 months.

I've been working with this company since June. I work in New Orleans and was wondering exactly what should my salary (hourly) range be?

I've done some research using various salary calculators and the like and generally have come up with anywheres from $14/Hr. - $20/Hr. for my metro area.

$20/Hr. seemed pretty high for someone with minimal experience (for a bookkeeping position), but I also thought $14/Hr. for a college grad seemed pretty low, especially since that's not far off from what they are paying me now.

Additional information: This job is part time, at the moment (possibly moving to 20 hours in the very very near future). I also work with my "boss" (mentioned above) on another client, which eventually will entail the same responsibilities I have with the current client.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Salary range?

help for what? are you asking what you should be making? Are they paying you $14 and you want $20?

Teacher in texas, or at least in houston, are starting at $40-$45, which is at or more than $20 an hour....and that would be if they worked 12 months out of the year.

I think I was so focused on getting all the info in the post that I forgot to even tell you guys what I was asking for.

Yes, I was curious as to what the going rate for someone with my experience, education, etc... in the New Orleans area. The numbers I got from the little bit of research I did, varied a good bit, so I figured I'd come here for some extra input about what hourly wage someone such as myself should merit.

In the end, I am worth what someone will pay me, but before I go into a meeting with my boss throwing out numbers that may be unrealistic, I'd like to get a feel for the correct salary range.

FYI, they are paying me $12/Hr. for now but mentioned that I would in fact receive a pay raise once I had graduated.

Did you try using http://salary.com/ and http://www.payscale.com/ as starting points?

Actually I've used both of those as well as others. Some said $14, some said $17, and some said upwards of $20.

If the salary range was $40,000 per year, I just divide the first two digits by two to get the hourly wage...not exact, but a quick way to see what you are making hourly assuming you work a 40 hour week.

    Re: Salary range?

What you get paid is reflective on what your title is. So, on salary.com, go by the titles that you think you are qualified to do.

If you've been working for these guys, doing the kind of work you'd be doing with your BS....then you can consider that to be years of experience, and use that to determine what job titles you should be seeking.

In this market, you take the money and keep your job. But, you also never stop looking for the next gig. Ever. Be discrete, since most employers don't like to know you are playing the field. Also, when an opportunity comes, be sure to give your employer a heads up, and give them the chance to reasonably counter. At least close to even money with the new job, if not more depending on the opportunity.

There's only two people that deserve your loyalty without earning it. Your kid, and your dog. Everyone else.....is a two way street. If they want you, then they'll pay you what your worth. But you're only worth what you can make (from someone elses offer).

So....hopefully you'll get a raise. If you don't....it's not the end of the world. But no matter what you get, you get your resume together, get it submitted to online sites like careerbuilder and places recruiters are looking, get your job search notificiations set up to give you weekly reports to send out apps for....and never stop looking.

If the word on the street is that you should be making between $14 and $20, then your employer needs to know that, and know that you know that. If you've got a god relationship wtih them, that can work for, and against you. You deserve more, but you also don't want to burden a company you're "friends" with inflated salary expectations and make them have to drop you. So....balance that.

Nothing less than $15. Nothing more than $20.

the other good thing about your line of experience is that you can run the books for a LOT of restaurants, and not just one. So, ask your employer if they know some people that could use a guy like you, vouch for you, etc. Tell him you're looking to make more by working more. That will then tell him that you deserve to get paid more, and/or that he should find some friends of his to refer you some hours here and there.

    never stop. more money.

Good advice. My "boss", isn't really my boss per-se. She is basically a CPA who has various clients. I was referred to her by a friend and she actually is constantly receiving new clients and needs help with the accounting work, so I definitely have the hook up in that regard for now. She is also ridiculous with quickbooks, and I am getting tons upon tons of valuable training with that program as well as with accounting in general.

Very helpful advice BD, it is much appreciated.

yet another reason to stay. you'll see in the spring (or this summer) how many of your friends have no job, and will have no job, for months on end. Business majors are a dime a dozen. And though your skills are relevant....it's the surplus of those with these skills flooding the market, combined with 10% unemployment making it that much more difficult.

So.....if you want more money (and I would think finishing your degree means you deserve more money...no employer would think that to be unreasonable), then ask for more money, and explain what those ranges are based on (salary.com is a good one...not "my friend said he makes $25 an hour, and I want $30).

What you're also getting paid in, it seems, is access to new clients. Potential customers, but also EMPLOYERS. As the weeks, and months, and years go by, having those email addresses and cell numbers, and face recogntion with these people is what's going to ensure not only that you get better jobs and more money, but that you STAY EMPLOYED.

At the end of the day, you are just a first year out of college nobody with a degree. There's a lot of people like you, including those who graduated ahead of you that still haven't gotten a job, as well as those a few years ahead of you, if not a few decades, who have lost their job. And not only do they have degrees, but extensive experience, and contacts, and networking, and resumes.

So....know your place. Get your shit taken care of. Apply for jobs. Get used to the process. What's bullshit, and what's not. What works and what doesn't.

    Make that money.

    Re: Salary range?

The fact that I am getting in good with new clients/future employers, is one of the reasons I'd really like to stay where I am...that and the fact that I enjoy working with the people I work with, and enjoy the job I am doing. I most definitely planned on using all the contact capabilities to my advantage. As of now, I have no plans on leaving, unless something extremely ridiculous and long term comes along.

With a pay increase I could donate to ttp....
