How does a competitor gain knowledge of what projects you are or aren't bidding on? This info is not supposed to be made public knowledge.
    Are you serious?

What's so unserious about it? I think some bidding processes are secret, at least with municipal contracts. I don't know about private......

Yes....and no. The builders we usually did work for weren't exactly a secret. They didn't need to know what we would bid....they would do their own estimating, and would throw in bids for thousands less than the jobs would cost to do. I saw it all the time.

Anytime you pay more for healthcare/benefits per employee then your average cost of steel per car you build there is a problem with the Union. Not all unions, but most are exploiting the employers after their necessary creation to stop the exploitation of the employee. Ie. Chrystler/GM

    Good thread, enjoyed the read.

(this is just a joke, for any of you, who take this seriously, please, send a self addressed stamped envelope to my PM box, make sure you put a return name on it, and under where it says "address" make sure to put "My Ass" so I know where to shove that letter...)
Methinks you brown nose too much.

And his thread wasn't a hijack attempt? Up to your old self enduring ways I see.

Oh, and I've added plenty of on-topic posts to justify my place in this thread.

Very true, my family owns and runs a production machine shop, it's against their interests to let anybody know what and who they are bidding for. Same goes for municipal contracts as mentioned above. I'm surprised at you Consultant, if you ran a business why would you ever want anybody outside of your business to know what you are working on and who you are working on it for?

This is what I don't understand, why wasn't it a secret? I could understand if there were only a couple builders in the area but to me that's unlikely. This information should not get out. IMO, it should even be kept from your own employees. It is proprietary information. In job shops they actually sometimes go the length of copying prints and whiting out the company names for protection from their own employees.

90% of contracts we bid, before selection I get the purchasing agent to tell me the other bidding firms and where we stack up in the price scale.

    Nothing is secret, almost ever.

I didn't mean to be insulting...I was just sure that everybody knew this.

Even "closed" bids are quietly distributed...almost every time.

And that's for "competitive" bids. Imagine situations where the bid is "wired" - the gov't entity has a firm "in mind" (read: pre-selected) - the entity spells out to their "preferred" contractor how exactly they can be guaranteed the contract. That firm doesn't even have to be the cheapest...I've been the wired bid and had the highest price...if the client wants you, the "competitive bid" process is a formality.
