My advice:
The written is easy but it is the easiest part to prepare for and get ahead of the other candidates. Use study guides and take all the time they give you to take it.
The physical, don't rush it. Ours is strictly pass or fail so make sure you pass. We don't even keep the times. If where you are testing does give credit for time you had better be in top shape and practice a lot, as technique can save literally minutes.
Oral board is the trickiest part. It is highly subjective and takes years to prepare for. I use 7 firefighters and 1 HR person for my boards. That being said, my firefighters can smell BS a mile away and they really want good people because they spend a third of the year living with them. If you want to be successful you can't just speak words like honor, loyalty, work ethic, etc. You have to live them-all the time! Wear a suit or at least a tie. Leave nothing to chance.
If you are deceitful or lazy, it will come up in your background check or your polygraph, then you are just wasting everyone's time.
It is a great career and is worth all the hoops. Let us know how it goes, drop me a PM if you need something else.
Good luck!

HI,
Tell us how it went??
The key to your interview is to be honest, enthusiastic and dedicated to the fire service and to the department you are wanting to work for. Learn as much as you can about the department you are interviewing for before your interview, this might help you understand the questions they are asking you.
During your interview come across confident but not arrogant.
Most departments these days want people who are educated, if you don't have a degree or are not working on one...Plan on getting one, have you degree plan filed.
I have been a firefighter for 21 years and love it, yes that makes me old.
Good Luck

Re: ttp Fire ifghters
well they pushed it back yet again but i finally got a firm date of march 6th to take the civil servants exam. got my letter and everything.
been studying math like crazy! as i didnt do an iota of it in highschool. thats why when i do get on to game it is so late at night and why I havent been very active in the forums latey.
I am very excited about going to work for the fire department even took the civilians fire academy class which was very cool!
this is a childhood dream of mine and im working hard to make it happen even to the point of not dating , drinking and very little gaming all in pursuit of this goal.
if i dont pass this time I will the next go around for sure its not rocket science i know but litterally I can't remember even stepping foot in a math class during highschool. so I am making up lots of ground work!
when i know something good or bad I'll let yall know!

Re: ttp Fire ifghters
thanks guys!, sadly i did not. I missed the score by 7 points. I am disappointed and down right sad, I studied over 4 months for that exam.
However I increased my score substantially from the last time i took it so it is not all bad.
So from here? I try to get into cccd fire academy program this august; I keep working my piss-ant job and I have already begun studying for next years exam.
I'm also going to start applying for different cities in the metro plex.
I may have lost this battle but I will win the war.
Thanks again for all the support and well wishes! I am sorry that I have not returned with good news.
oh and I haven't been on in a bit thus the lack of an update or game presence. I got bit pretty nasty on the wrist by a chow I MEAN A WEREWOLF! i sent laggy a pic of it=) any way everything is all messed up in my hand so i'll be on asap.
