    Old Rock vs New Rock

Quit cluttering up that RIP thread and duke it out here. I'd like to start out by saying some of these new metal bands still reach into their songs emotionally. I have listened to some of these like I was reading a book. Each song is another chapter of the story. A good example for me is a song called Shallow by God Forbid. It is short and sweet with a pretty interesting outtro solo. Winds of Plague is another good metal band that I have been listening to. They didn't create anything unique by mixing the keyboard in their songs, but they sure did a good job at perfecting it (or coming close).

Honestly at this point I can't even listen to anything except metal anymore. Everything else just bores me to tears. The funny thing is that I used to absolutely hate it. I thought the screaming was retarded until I tried to do it myself. I slowly got into it by listening to some metalcore bands such as Bullet for my Valentine. In my experience it takes much more voice training to be able to scream and peak your voice whilst holding a note and still conjure some smidgen of coherence. I definitely agree that there are some shitty metal bands that try to be really fast.

Re: Old Rock vs New Rock

    Ok.

Let me try and break this down from the wonderful mind of the jinx.

Lets start off from the basics. The core elements of music and the roots of it all.
I myself play the guitar, I am not some wannabe country pro :2 but I have a respect for all instruments and realize they can all play the same piece of sheet music.

Here is what I consider the basic and classics of it all.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dWBeDhq9HA

Now notice how the music plays out. Starts off loud then goes to a soft melody then picks back up with force.

    We move onto the 60's

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cqh54rSzheg

Notice how is does not have to be ultra fast riffs but rather slow and meaningful.

    Lets go the the 70's
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgsoJrzplUI
Harder Riffs but still song with a ton of emotion and killer solo's.

    80's
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xbmoiP8gkU
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQpsPdZTu3g
I am not all into the hairbands but punkrock was growing.
Most were repeating power chords but it got the blood pumping.

Now onto the 90's my fav.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZb_RFwyenU
soma....notice how it starts off real slow and soft yet picks up real hard around 3:35
I love the pumpkins because they used a fender strat and a les paul wich gave them such a sick sound. Corgan solo with the fender at 4:26, james kicks in his les paul solo at 5:02
To me this sounds soo methodical from start to finish.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8XOZR-JIAk
    One of a kind sound.

    Last but not least
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65jkFKR-udY
This song has soo much emotion behind it, its unreal.

Then we move on to todays music......
let me pull up the top 10 real quick

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFHN0gcMUf0
what the fuck is this shit?
Sounds just like all the other thousands of bands out there at the moment.

To me it seems the rest of the music is based around the vocals.....it needs to be the other way around.

Sheet music first then comes the vocals.
Music now days do not pull from the roots or basics but rather the top band on MTV's top 10 :3

    Well there ya have it.

That's nothing, Nirvana and Pearl Jam get played on "classic rock" stations these days. Feel even older.
