Has anyone been brave enough to try this fruit?
I found it at a Asian specialty market around here and have been trying to get the wife to eat it with me.

Not me.
Once I did see it featured on the Travel Channel show "Bizarre Foods", and the host (who eats ANYTHING) could barely get it down. After forcing down one swallow, he couldn't take anymore. And this from a guy who eats worms, maggots, beetles, guts, etc. from around the world.
I am not a picky eater, but no thank you.

Re: Durian
Hmmmm, according to Travel and Food writer Richard Sterling:
... its odor is best described as pig-shit, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away. Despite its great local popularity, the raw fruit is forbidden from some establishments such as hotels, subways and airports, including public transportation in Southeast Asia.

Re: Durian
I've eaten a lot of it actually and its quite good. Whoever wrote the article is exaggerating like mad. It tastes like a slightly rotten banana, mixed with candied mango or something... I guess that's the closest I can get to describing the taste.
My aunt is from the Philippines and they eat tons of it over there. She's also a superb cook and makes these awesome candied durian stick things that are great.
