Gotta be overseas, they tend to be better. I know Thrice's old stuff was really good(punkish rock), "Illusion of Safety." And it depends on what you mean by alternative.

I'm sticking as close to Punk/Alt as I can here, so I'll leave out poppunk.

The Swellers are a great Punk group, their 2009 release is sick.

Balance and Composure may be one of the greatest bands ever to surface in the Punk/Alt genre. Download their 2009 EP "Only Boundaries"

    Tigers Jaw
is also an amazing band, "Plane Vs Tank Vs Submarine" is definitely in my top 100 song list.

    Latin For Truth
Rocks hard, combining Punk and Hardcore, their 2009 release ElevenEleven is awesome.

If you do like Rise Against, you will most likely love Polar Bear Club (who are 1000x times better than Rise Against, anyday.)

Definitely one of the best bands of the modern era. Their 2009 Release "Chasing Hamburg" is phenomenal. Their live performance is life-changing.

I have to mention the following PopPunk bands only because they are amazing and you would most likely enjoy listening to them.

Title Fight - Their 2009 release "the last thing you forget" includes all of their songs.
Set Your Goals - Have a sick 2009 release called "this will be the death of us"
Four Year Strong - "Rise or Die Trying" is their "real" release, their 2009 album is all 90s covers made poppunk. New album by them march 2010.
The Wonder Years - About to release a new album (which I already have) with a much more mature sound than "Get Stoked on It" or their other EP's.

Hopefully you have never heard of any of these guys, and I introduced you to some real music, not the major label trash you see on MTV or hear on the radio.

That all sounded like pop-punk to me.

    Re: Punk / Alternative Bands

I could see why you said that, but I'm pretty specific about genres.

Polar bear club is melodic hardcore.
The Swellers aren't pop enough to be considered pop punk.
Balance and composure is melodic punk / alt.
Tigers Jaw, their like Punk/Alt/Indie depending on the song.
    Latin for truth is punk/hardcore.
