Re: Best movies of 2009
Moon
Up
The Road
Inglorious Basterds
Hurt Locker
The Cove (totally forgot about that one)
And a list from a site whose taste usually coincides with my own:

I am really kicking myself for not having seen A Serious Man yet. It will be on disc next month, I'll just wait until then.
Oh and anybody who "doesn't adore the Coen brothers" cannot be considered an expert in my book.

Re: Best movies of 2009
The best movies I saw in 2009 are:
In the Loop = Intelligent and sharp comedy about the political lead up to the Iraq War. A fantastic cast of characters pulls of some of the most hilarious one liners I've seen in a long time.
Moon = It's like 2001, only it makes sense!!!
The Fantastic Mr. Fox = I adore Roald Dahl and having such a star studded cast do this book in stop motion animation was just freaking awesome...
The Hurt Locker = Holy crap was this an adrenaline pumping movie. But not in the Hollywood explosion-sex-explosion sort of way. This movie jsut had tension that you could cut with a knife. I held my breath for a couple of the scenes...

my top 5:
1. The Hurt Locker-just awesome, its intense and honestly found it to be emotionally draining almost
2. District 9-I'd call it the best sci-fi movie of 2009 and hope it gets an award somewhere, just excellent movie
3. The Cove thats right i liked The Cove more then IB. Cove was an eye-opener, but also was like a real-life suspense movie
4. Inglorious Basterds again very good, thought it would be more of an action movie and was plesently surprised to find out it wasn't. Very few slow spots for a 2hour+ movie
5. Worlds Greatest Dad A really good comedy, made more for people in their 30s (according to the director, so no idea why i like it) but it has believable characters with flaws, and more real humor and doesn't try to hit the audiences with the jokes i guess
By the way World's Greatest Dad gets snubbed pretty bad at the award shows so far, it should of been up at least for a GG in comedy and musical. Also what with the one critic liking Nine? i've heard its horrible.

My Top 5:
The Hurt Locker: Best movie i have seen in a VERY long time. An amazing adrenaline rush! I have yet to have a movie keep my eyes wide and my jaw open from start to finish.
Up: I actually cried at some parts. Suspenseful, yet funny....goofy, yet intriguing. Brilliant movie!
The Ugly Truth: I dont understand why that was on the worst list, i laughed my ass off!
The Hangover: It took a very long time before i actually got to watch this movie, but it was worth the wait....
District 9: Just a straight up excellent movie. It has no underlying theme, no liberal bullshit behind the plot, it just straight reaches out and touches you!

Re: Best movies of 2009
In no Particular order.
Up
Wonderful movie. I laughed, I cried, and really got behind the characters.
Moon
I got a great nostalgic feeling from this movie. Maybe it was the models. Plus an original plot and wonderful performances by Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey.
District 9
Again, some original Sci-Fi. Some gratuitous violence, and this movie had a very real feel to it. Not necessarily in the visuals (which were great considering the budget) but the story itself.
Hurt Locker
This squeaks into the list. There are a lot of things I don't like about this movie, but I have to admit it kept me right on the edge of the seat when I saw it and few movies do that with me.
Movies that squandered their chances.
Inglorious Basterds
Quentin I understand no one writes dialogue like you do but for fucks sake don't sacrifice the action movie for a 2 hour conversation. I know you want to show off but that movie was 30 minutes too long.
