    Recording device

I need advice on buying something to record guitar with. I'm not looking for a studio setup or anything but I think I might be looking for something more than this:
    http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com...der?sku=580037
My friend has a box that he can plug into that goes to usb, I think that would be cool but probably pricey, not to mention it may need expensive software.

Any thoughts? Basically what I'm looking to do i record instrumental songs with this thing, 1 instrument at a time. I don't even have plans for drums or bass but the capability would be nice. I'm not looking to spend a ton since this is just leisure.

    thoughts?

haven't done any real research yet, but these seem like kind of what I'm looking for:

Are you wanting something that records directly to the device on to some sort of media, or an interface for your computer to record via software?

....I'm not really sure. the second one I think, I would want to be able to edit in audacity or something cheap. I'm not really looking to mic my amp or anything but I suppose I would need to for any kind of drums. I'm in humblingly unfamiliar waters here.

Ideally no more than 250, I'd have to be sorely tempted to go over 350.

How about middle ground at $300?

Digidesign is pretty much the industry standard in terms of recording, and I trust their products to deliver (all my recording interfaces have been Digidesign since I could afford them). Also, on the plus side, you get a copy of ProTools LE with it, so it's ready to go out of the box. And don't let the LE tag fool you, PT LE is an extremely powerful piece of software.

    Re: Recording device

    That is tempting
this is more of a guitar related question but you probably know the answer:

Would I need to plug my guitar straight into the box via 1/4 or could I connect it to my amp? I have an fx loop, a phone/line jack, and a speaker output.

PT is tempting but is there something cheaper if I wanted to just settle for audacity?

    that thing really is tempting....

    Re: Recording device

You could run your amp from the line/headphone jack to it, or direct from your guitar into it, as PT has really good amp simulator effects you can apply to the signal once it's in your computer. A lot of the projects Flea and I did were just his guitar straight into the interface, then used amp simulators and effects to get the sound we were looking for, but the option is there.

If you want to go cheaper, try this.

I've used (but not owned) a few M-Audio products before, and they seem pretty solid.
