your exhaust falls off...
So as some of you know I drive a 1976 BMW 2002. Well its definitely got its problems and I had one yesterday... And mind you this isn't the first time that it has done this :/ So I'm on my way home from school and I knew my cars exhaust was leaking at the down pipe, again, but I start the car, warm it up for a minute and start my 7 mile drive home. I pull out of school and my car gets a little louder. I ignore it. Take a right going up a hill and pass a kid and my exhaust starts getting REAL loud. It did this once before so I know what the problem is! I pull over and have no tools or rope with me to fix or tie it up... :P So I think for a minute, I then pull my boot lace out and crawl under my car, yes I can crawl under it (im both very skinny and my car hasn't been lowered yet). But I look at it for a minute and tie up my exhaust with my boot lace. Start the car turn around and head home with my car roaring the whole way. The last time this happened it was 9:20 at night in the middle of August! Do my neighbors ever love me :P
Then today my car springs a nasty coolant leak, but I wont go there now :2

Re: your exhaust falls off...
lol I hear ya on that shit.
I had a 1967 Chevy p/u with a 350 with custom intake and headers leading into 3 1/2 in pipes. Bitch was a loud motha to begin with. Then had a problem with the header coming off the block. Think about how loud that might be.....
Shit is annoying though.

Re: your exhaust falls off...
Well exhaust is an easy fix, Ur coolant leak could be bad. If its comming from the radiator ull need a new radiator OR you can get that stop leak stuff. Its like little metal pebbles or something that clog holes in ur radiator, but its only a temp fix and destroys ur rad completely. So i would rule that out untill u kno for a fact that ur going to get a new rad anyways and just wanna bust that one up completely.

I definitely hear you. My mother in law gave us a 1989 toyota camry wagon that I now dearly love but has had the exhaust fall off, power steering leak and a host of other things that the tax money is going to fix. Mind you this car has nearly a quarter of a million miles on it now and still purrs, it just needs non engine components fixed.
I just seafoamed it today and it blew out a lot of the carbon and idles and runs a lot better, changed the plugs, wires, distributor, thermostat, air filter and exhaust. Going to put in new struts, cv axles/boots, new tires and new belts within the next month. I also plan to paint it and get a new windshield sometime in the near future.
Old cars can run forever if you get a good model and they have been taken care of, you just have to be mindful of what needs changed.
I would suggest you learn how to do everything yourself as it really pays in the end to be able to cut your costs if you love the vehicle.
Not the most manly vehicle, but the USMC plates and the fact that I like it make the difference to me.
Love your car, keep it maintained.

Re: your exhaust falls off...
I had something similar happen to a car i built. Got it running at 1030 at night on a set of open headers. So it's was an 86 firebird 350 sbc 60 over with a
525 i 525e with 50 lift so the car rumbled to begin with but on open headers it was shooting blue flames out the exhaust. So i put a set of glass packs on it so i could drive it to work the next day.
I get about 50 miles away just past daytona and a pack falls off at 5 in the morning. Then i started passing highway patrol sitting on the side of the road sounding like nascar going by. Oddly enough not one of them even pulled me over. Makes perfect sense i play my sterio loud i get yanked but run open exhaust i'm good.

Re: your exhaust falls off...
Well the great things is I know how to work on my car so none of this is a problem for me. I did fix the coolant leak which was an easy one. I just need to replace the water pump now :P It's a little leaky and I get a nice blast of heat right after I hit 5k RPMS.... But it's a good car with a whopping 63k miles after 34 years! I plan to keep it held together as long as I can!
