Rep John Murtha has just died at the age of 77

WASHINGTON (AP) - A spokesman says Democratic Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, a retired Marine Corps officer who became an outspoken critic of the Iraq war, has died. He was 77.

He had been suffering complications from gallbladder surgery.

In 1974, Murtha became the first combat veteran of the Vietnam War elected to Congress. He wielded considerable clout for two decades as a leader of the House subcommittee that oversees Pentagon spending. But frustration over the Iraq war led him to call for an immediate pullout of U.S. troops in 2005.

Murtha's congressional career was clouded by questions about his ethics—from the Abscam corruption probe in 1980 to more recent investigations into the special-interest spending known as earmarks and the raising of cash for election campaigns.

Was he the one who said that the war was lost or the one who voted to cut funding...or was he the one who called our soldiers war criminals. He was controversial for about 15 minutes but I can't recall why.

*edit* Just looked it up, he accused some Marines of cold blooded murder after the Haditha incident. I recall hearing some hyper-ventilating on the subject a couple years ago.

Anyway - RIP. Another emergency election? When was he up for reelection?

RIP,

All people deserve to be left alone and dignity when addressing them after just passing. Know that we conservatives just jumped on the Kennedy situation because so many were touting him as a "Saint". The improper descriptions of his record and service deserved rebuttal. Here I encourage everyone to keep it clean, people die daily and we will too; and none of us are without blame.

He was right...it was cold blooded murder. Just b/c some here may have hyper-ventilated doesn't take away from that fact.

to show my train of thought...thats all.

7 of the 8 marines were acquitted & 1 still faces manslaughter charges...a far cry from murder in cold blood...but i digress.

To be honest I could care less that he died...... Good People die everyday. He wasn't one of the ones that I would go so far as to say was a good person.

He was one of those who initially supported the Iraq war, but later changed their mind.

He was also one of those to condemn the troops involved in Haditha prior to the facts coming out, and as Consultant pointed out the facts turned out not to support his comments.

He was also one of those involved in the ABSCAM scandal, but actually seemed up to the task of potentially being bribed if it could return workers to jobs in his district. I guess the most honorable corruption you could ask for.

He was a Marine and a Vietnam vet who served his country in combat.

And he loved bringing our tax dollars back to his state, hand over fist.
