Re: I believe in science...
Overweight, drink occasionally.
I don't get what exactly you're trying to say here Civil, but it seems like you keep confusing facts with behavior.
Its a known fact that cigarettes are bad for you, the fact that people still smoke them doesn't mean they aren't still bad for you. It just means some people are too addicted, or have too little self control to stay away from things they are fully aware are bad for them.
I consider my world view very "logical." I understand that alcohol is poison, and bad for me. I still drink sometimes, and I drink a lot when I do. Does that mean drinking is good for me because I do it? Behavior is independent from fact. A lot of people saying they eat lard burgers doesn't make lard burgers good for you.
Having a logical world view doesn't mean you think no one makes mistakes, or that you make perfect decisions all the time based off logic with no emotion. It means you believe what is real, factual, and proven. But just because you believe something is true, and just because its been proven, doesn't mean you'll make a good decision with that knowledge.
Oh and just a little FYI. Technically speaking, both emotion and "fun" are scientific. The science behind brains, thought, and emotion is really interesting.

Re: I believe in science...
Hmmmm
interesting poll.
Key word to me is moderation.
I would say 80% of the time my food intake is clean and the other 20% will be crap from time to time because I am human.
A cheeseburger is tasty as hell!
I work out about 5 times a week and sometimes twice a day. I do smoke however......... :2 but so far it has not held back my progress. I might slow down the puffs now that I will be leaning more towards cardio than heavy compound barbell lifts.
On that note its time for me to finish up my last bulking workout session. Time to head out.

Re: I believe in science...
What? We're not computers, we don't make perfectly logical decisions, nor does someone with confidence in science always have to follow what it has deemed fact in regard to their personal behavior. Just because you believe in the general accuracy and benefit of much of what science has come up with does not mean you make perfect lifestyle choices, want to live the lifestyle that science would show is most healthy, or are not subject to behavioral inconsistency. The nice thing with science is, you don't have to follow anything in regards to your lifestyle, and you probably won't. I think "smart" people recognize that.

Re: I believe in science...
I don't know exactly how to put this, but eating a cheeseburger does not make someone illogical, Civil. Eating a cheeseburger every once in awhile even though you know it's not so great for you, for the short term benefit of having a life that occasionally lets you taste food that's really good and hits the spot, is not irrational. It's saying "the tradeoff between the enjoyment caused by one cheeseburger and a slight decrease in intestinal/heart health is worth it" because if you eat bad foods in moderation then the impact is low. If you wanted to make the argument that there are people who don't believe in religion due to there not being enough scientific evidence to support it, and then those people will take certain non-religious items on faith alone even when they fly in the face of scientific fact, onthen your poll should be "Do you think there's nothing wrong with smoking like a chimney, being an alcoholic, or being morbidly obese due to an obscene level of food consumption, and take part in those things." I'm guessing that most people here would not pick those options.
I don't know exactly what spawned this, so maybe I'm missing something.Join the TPG Folding @ home team: http://www.teamplayergaming.com/pc-h...ding-team.html

Re: I believe in science...
the irony here is almost overwhelming.
if you are logical enough then you sorta understand the disconnects between logic and life... some of which have been well documented.
if you're just exposing people as hypocrits in a different way there's really no need. we're all hypocrits somehow. life itself is hypocritcal... it's a bitch and then you die.
so what's the point? you're trying to say that since people know better they're what (fill in this blank) ____________ for being human?
ps - you'll find scientists that smoke cigarettes and evangalists that bang choir boys. i don't see how this makes meaningful points about either group relative to each other...
