If we gather them all together and build the pyramids, we will increase our chances of generating a great engineer! Plus it will enable all government civics.

Yes, because having a roof over your head, warm food every day and the more basic necessities like a gym and cable television is a real shithole.

I still say we should use them for more grunt work. They should have to work 8+ hour days of manual labor 5 or 6 days a week. Paint the bridges, pull weeds, plant trees, mow public parks... Make them have to really earn their shelter and food at or below minimum wage.
Would think people would get by shithole i don't mean current prisons. i think they are too soft at the moment.

I have said it before and I will say it again for those who may not have read it. I have stared down the barrel of a gun, the gun held in the hand of a soon to be murderer. That gun was loaded but the bullet was not meant for me that night for some unknown reason. My life was spared and another life taken.

I do not want that man to die. Although I was not harmed nor did I know the man who was, I was close enough and still feel no desire for him to be executed. It is better to not sink to that level.

    1194 executed since '76.
133 exonerated in that same time.

    ^ 11%

11% is a bit of a dent, and you can add on to that those released due to 'probable innocence', and maybe even those with sentences commuted.

The guys sitting on death row are getting their chance to be in that 11% that are TOTALLY innocent in court.

    1 in 10 people is a dent.

As to your 4.32%, I'm not sure that number's relevant, as every man on death row has yet to fall on one side or the other of innocence/guilt, but 1 in 23 may still be worth saving.

If they are sitting on deathrow then they most certainly have fallen on a side of innocent or guilt. The numbers your trying to use to come with a percentage are not correct there are 3215 inmates sitting on death row as of 2009. You say 1194 have already been executed and now 133 have been exonerated. The number before was 139. It's higher so we'll use that one.

    3215 sitting on death row
    1194 already executed
    4509 total inmates
    139 exonerated

    139/4509x100= 3.08%

You had better numbers before for a debate on it.
1 out of a 1000 is not acceptable

And the facts and figures show that we spend more executing someone than we do housing them for a life sentence

Ha and the pro death penalty folks keep arguing numbers while ignoring their moral vacuity. Have you nothing to say about all the ethical arguments that have been laid before you by people here? Or is putting your fingers in your ears and yelling "lalalalala I can't hear you" a means you still use to enable your inane positions?

I have nothing against cutting costs in prisons with subsistence labor and more spartan conditions, but anyone who still advocates the death penalty is being foolish.

Well i cant say i disagree but at the same time you have to consider what is in mind for the great good of the public and letting 1 go free to kill 2 more people is a justifiable reason to keep 1 in that isn't. Simple math. Then you also have to look at the fact our justice system lets plenty of guilty free to commit crime again on just technicalities. The ends justify the means.

First you have introduce a moral vacuity before you can act like those that are pro death penalty are ignoring it.

I urge you to read the case summaries of those exonerated and those likely innocent when executed. If your faith in the courts is enough to assume that all men on death row are 'guilty', this may help you understand why I consider them 'unresolved'.

I thought I did, I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. I am saying it is immoral to kill innocent people via the judicial system, which is what inevitably happens when you advocate the death penalty. I am also saying that the ratio of guilty to innocent people being killed by the judicial system is irrelevant, as a single innocent purposely killed in a system over which we have total control (unlike, say, war or combat) is morally unacceptable. Therefore those who advocate this means of punishment are exhibiting a certain level of moral vacuity, a problem which they seem unwilling to address by continually arguing over largely irrelevant figures rather than the superseding ethical issue.
