Re: The Future of MMA
That being said, I know lots of young people who've had their troubled childhoods turned around by the discipline that the martial arts offer. Martial arts have the potential to be inappropriately abused - sure, but they also have the potential to teach honor, respect, discipline, hard work, etc.
If they were learning Karate at the YMCA i wonder if the reaction would be so strong.
Lots of kids learn wrestling (as shown by the clips from their tournament) - and wrestling can get you a college scholarship. They are just practicing striking as well.
I see where bigdog is coming from, with most MMA guys being poor role models - but the intent of the father is to get them a college scholarship for wrestling, get them an education, and let them decide if they want to go into professional fighting after that.
I dont see child abuse, per-se.

Re: The Future of MMA
Yea I dont know about all this......
Football is fun for ADULTS, get where I am going with this.
Baseball, soccer, basketball, or swimming whatever sport your kid shows interest go for it. Even some light contact karate is good for kids.
Its when you get the heavy hits from football or boxing that concerns me when they are still young. Is taking all that impact to the head such a good idea when they are still developing? I know some of you have seen rare cases when someone is killed on the field or gets hit so hard the suffer serious head trauma.
Point I am trying to make is maybe we should not risk it just to get a touchdown or some knockout. Then when they are older lets say around 16+ then let them start making the transition if they want.
If some of you think that I am against competitive sports let me quote myself from facebook.
Jacob won his first t-ball game of the year! Head coach could not make it so the 2nd in command (me) lead the team to their first win! Now its off to the gym to cardio blast.final score 21-12
I am sure bigdog is all about FFPS............

Re: The Future of MMA
I'd say the same about kids in football. The sports kids normally play are about agility and speed and not hitting eachother. Soccer. Baseball. swimming and basketball even.
football is about hitting eachother. I think junior high and up....where kids are starting to build the size and strength they need to do the sport as its intended is fine. But elementary and under.....hell...... simply vicarious living of adults through children. Football is way too complex of a game for a 6 year old to understand. Can they throw a ball? sure. Can they run up and down the field? Sure. Can they truly understand downs and plays and tactics of football? no.
that's why they play soccer, since it's for stupid people.

Re: The Future of MMA
Not that I am in complete disagreement,......... but how does one come to the conclusion that "most MMA guys are poor role models"? Because they throw punches kicks and have tattoos?
Would you consider most servicemen to be poor role models? They learned to kill, most have a tattoo, and many many many have drug problems as well as their proneness to domestic violence as well as alcohol abuse.....
How about lawyers? Good role models? Yeah they don't elbow, roundhouse or jab, but they try every chance they can to fuck their adversary......
I suppose it all depends on what one is apt to overlook in order to define someone as worthy enough to be a considered a good role model...

But...no...instead you read punches and tatoos.
Typical.

Re: The Future of MMA
and let's be honest...I sincerely doubt many, if any MMA allstars are spending their time doing charity work at their local homeless shelter.
Of course, here comes wikipedia to show me some anecdote about how much 1 guy gave last year to the red cross.
There's 1000's of fighters. So, as a whole....would you let them babysit your kids or date your sister?
