I took taekwondo, karate, boxing, and a little hapkido. They all aided in teaching me restraint when I normally would have just gone for a sucker punch to the nose. Kids who just wanna pick fights have problems at home and it's not a direct result of their training.
True they MIGHT have home issues, but as I said earlier,I noticed my son using it during rough play with his brothers or friends.I put a stop to it right there and then. Boys will be boys and I dont care what anyone says.If you dont have kids of your own, you will not understand what they do.Boys love to play fight, tackle each other, give nuggies, etc. Learning a martial art just gives them tools to use during these times. YOUNG KIDS DO NOT UNDERSTAND RESTRAINT!!!!!

I may not have kids of my own but I was a kid and I never used Judo or any other thing I learned for rough housing or starting fights. I learned discipline at a young age and KNEW that I was not to start a fight just because I could. I did, and still do understand restraint. Don't underestimate the intelligence of a child.

If they don't know restraint then they will just use a falcon punch or a knee to the nuts instead of an arm bar.

Bullshit. You must not have had friends then. And if you did, they were all girls. You get a group of boys together and they rough house, plane and simple.

    Re: The Future of MMA

My drive is to ensure that my son has the capabilities to stand up for himself, as young men sniff out the timid and pick on them/abuse them. Should that time come, I want Max being able to win.

My idea was the enroll him in some kind of Martial arts for the discipline aspect of it, and straight up boxing for the ability to stike aspect. IMO being able to strike through boxing increases the ability to come out on top much more than martial arts. My comments about people with only boxing training being involved in trouble with the law because they had the ability to inflict punishment without the restraint to keep it to themselves unless needed are based on my experiences around Gaithersburg Md and may not port to everyone's locale.

Jason's point on head injuries is an excellent one, and bears serious consideration in the debate about whether or not one should involve children in sports like this.

Maybe whimpy old soccer is a better solution, as he can just run away from conflict.

I had friends, but not anymore and we would fight, but none of us took martial arts, and we still beat each others' asses. Boys are going to rough house, at least with some training they know better how to control themselves, and others.

But how is punching someone in the face any better that whatever else they might learn Jester?
