Re: Shotgun Purchase
I second the Remington 870 but you are at a fork in the road. Do you want a 100% home defense gun or a sporting gun that you can use to protect you home? Home defense only go with option 1 that Blakeman posted, for the later go with option 2.
Browning makes a BPS with a 26" barrel. I think it is even closer to match both worlds. I own one and love it. I honestly feel the BPS is the best pump shotty on the planet. It costs a little more than the Remington but a better gun IMO.

Re: Shotgun Purchase
I would say you need a 20 gauge. Can't go wrong with either the Remington 870 express or Mossberg 500 pumps. If you are 6 ft tall I would go with a 24-26 inch barell. This will give you some versatility for both home and field use. Both brands have screw in chokes that can be changed to adjust for a larger, or tighter shot pattern. I personally prefer the mossberg's because the safety is located on the top, and is easily turned on or off with the thumb of the hand carrying the gun, and more visible (I am always checking to make sure my safety is on). The Remington's safety is located on the side of the trigger case. I have owned both of these models at some time and never had a problem with either. Both are very rugged and at a descent price.

Again, for CHEAP, you can get either base model from Wal-Mart/Academy and then pick up a short barrel separately like at your local gun store which will have dozens of used barrels and pay less than those combo prices.

Re: Shotgun Purchase
870E is a great gun. If you want one for multi purposes just get another barrel. They are easy to change out.
What is your definition of cheap?
Personally, I love my O/U (Over/Under) for clays and field hunting. Berreta White Onyx Sporting 32". Although, its about $1800. But, it is a hand down gun to your kids once you are done with it. It will last forever.

Re: Shotgun Purchase
Just get a 20 gauge, anything bigger is overkill for home defense imo. The difference between shooting clays and home defense can be made with the shells you choose.
also, a semi auto wouldn't be a bad idea although they sometimes jam more so for home defense it might be a bad idea unless you get a nice one. Another thing, stay away from two barreled stuff, get something that will hold the max shells, don't forget to remove the insert for max capacity.

Re: Shotgun Purchase
hmm, there are a lot of cheap shotguns out there that I would deem unreliable, I've been out dove hunting plenty of times and had the borrowed shotgun stop working on me due to a firing pin failure or something. I would always hear my dad mutter, "wish Don would stop using those cheap shotguns."
With that being said, look for a good quality shotgun for a cheap price by searching for a used one. Gunbroker.com is one place you can check out.
