A 12 gauge shotgun that shoots 3" shells is a pretty versatile shotgun, with the right shot you can go for many different types of bird from quail and dove to even duck and goose on an overcast day(unless you're good at calling them). Anything that's good enough for a bird will be plenty good enough for a human in your home.

A 26" barrel would be ideal though 28" is more common. The 26 will let you swing faster for passing shots which is probably the most common type of shooting situation.
Changing barrels is quite easy. Pull the slide down as if ejecting a shell, unscrew the large cap at the end of the fore stock, pull the barrel out. Reverse to install new barrel.
