Shotgun Purchase
I'm looking to buy a new shotgun. Now to be honest.......i don't know shit about guns. Yes i have shot a gun. But never owned one.
I want a reliable but CHEAP shotgun. Also, take into consideration, i'm a small mother fucker. 6' 145lb.
So i don't want no, big ass bazooka of a shotgun.
I'm just looking for something to protect my home, and occasionally go out with the guys and shoot some clays.
Any Suggestions....?

Re: Shotgun Purchase
if you want it for home defense get a 18.5 inch barrel. If you want to shoot clays then get the cheap mossberg at academy... its kinda one or the other

Re: Shotgun Purchase
Get a Mossberg 500 Pump. You should be able to handle a 12ga but you won't like shooting it a lot.
I've used a Mossberg 500 Pump in 20ga with a 24" barrel for sheet shooting. With a 20ga you can shoot it all day and not get a sore shoulder. (I've since upgraded to a sweet Ruger Red Label OU in 20ga.)
At close range, 20ga more than deadly enough - 18 pellets of #3 Buck is more than enough for defense.
I wouldn't cut down your only barrel. It'll wreck any 'sporting' fun. Instead get a second barrel and cut that down. You must be very careful with cut-downs cuz if you go under 18", it's a felony! Some local authorities can vary from where that 18" is measured and it can cause you lots of legal headaches. Consult a gunsmith.

Re: Shotgun Purchase
Under 18 inches is a felony without the proper paperwork since it would be a short barrel shotgun.
I have a Remington 870 shotgun with a 20 inch and 28 inch barrel and it does everything I need it too. You can usually find them used for $250 and lower, or new for $300+. It is a great gun and I got the express magnum and have never had a hang-up with it.

I got my 20 inch shorter barrel from a buddy for $40 bucks, the barrels are easy to switch out and require no tools. You can get tube extensions as well if you want a higher capacity, but if you are hunting make sure you know any capacity limits they have for your state.
Mossberg 500 is a good one too, my family just favors the Remingtons.
edit: 18 inches and longer is legal, the .5 I had was me thinking about rifles whose shortest barrels can only be 16.5 inches.
