    T1.. Question

Why is T1 still more expensive than cable? You can get around 10-15mbs down in many places now...
Why would you want T3 or more (45mbs) at a whopping $6000 / mo.? Seems likes overkill to me.

I understand T# is a direct line to the backbones of the internet... but WHY pay thousands of dollars for what seems like an insignificant increase in speed? (I mean, I'd love a dedicated 45mb/s vs a non-dedicated 10mb/s ... but for some $5950 extra dollars... I think not...)

T1 gets you a direct line and guaranteed bandwidth... So what? I can still download anything faster on cable than T1. And T1 costs hundreds of dollars a month. I'm still not seeing the light :P

    Re: T1.. Question

The bandwidth is dedicated, and guaranteed. You will get 45 up/down with a T3, 24/7. Home lines are only promised to approach their maximum speeds, and if the network gets congested, you can see a marked decrease in performance.

The routing is better. The fewer hops any signal has to go through, the fewer routers are involved (and thus, fewer routers to go tits up right when your customers need you most), the lower signal degradation, better pings and fewer dropped packets to more of the globe. If you want to be certain that your clients in East Bumfuck, Uzbekistan are going to be able to access your site/server, you go T3.

Fewer restrictions on protocol/bandwidth usage. You can saturate your T3 up and down 24/7 all year long if you want, and you will never get a nasty letter telling you to tone it down. As well, you can run just about anything from a T3; bittorrent, FTP, game servers. You name it, you can use it, and in all directions.

For a home user, T3 is way overkill and T1 makes no sense either. They're commercial products designed and implemented for a commercial purpose. If you want to dork around with your buddies in BF2, get a home line; if you want to run a business and want some measure of guarantee of quality of service, you buy into the T# series (or the OC-# series, nowadays).

Same upload and down load speed. I got an 18meg connection. It seems to be plenty.

    Re: T1.. Question

But my argument is why even buy T1 (1.4~ mb/s) when, most all the time, you get MORE than that with just regular cable
