    Foxconn Suicides

apparently they manufacture apple products, including the iPhone at this plant, and have been having a number of suicides recently :/.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/asi...c/10137101.stm
A ninth employee has jumped to his death at Taiwanese iPhone manufacturer Foxconn, China's state media reports.

Xinhua said 21-year-old Nan Gang leapt from a four-storey factory in the early hours, soon after finishing work.

Shortly after, it emerged that the death of a worker at a Foxconn plant in Hebei province earlier this year was also a suicide.

A total of 11 Foxconn employees have tried to kill themselves this year - two have survived.

The incidents have raised concerns about worker treatment at the site...

I think you meant to link this story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/asi...c/10137101.stm (the one you have in the OP is about challengers to Facebook).

Kotaku had a story on this a few days ago, in it they said that even in spite of the media attention these suicides are getting, the rate is still fairly far below China's national average for suicides per capita. What many don't realize is that the factory where these suicides are occuring employs something like 300,000 workers. It's not like a factory in the US, it's a whole city unto itself.

Given that, 9 deaths in 300,000 people seems very minor indeed. The news media has seen fit to blow the whole situation out of proportion though, merely because of the association with popular, in-vogue technology. The suicides of a relatively few Chinese workers only tangentially associated with the iPhone get more press coverage than the people still dying in Haiti, or Malayasia, or Thailand, or...

    It's despicable.

Nothing wrong with Apple products, except the Ipad.

As for the article, quite sad.... and strange.

This. And not to mention, these suicides occurred by people jumping off the 7th floor of the Dormitory.

Here is the kotaku article: http://kotaku.com/5544432/and-the-suicides-continue
