Re: Underwater 'basejumping' at Dean's Blue Hole
The bends come from breathing while underwater. You take air into your lungs while is then dissolved in your blood. As you desend the pressure on your body allows more and more gases to become dissolved, I believe the term is supersaturated if I remember my chem101, As you ascend and the pressure on your body lessens the dissolved gasses in your blood ... well undissolve, sort of like opening a can of beer or soda, the Co2 in the beer returns to gas form when the pressure is lowered from the can being opened. Those gas bubbles in your blood typically gather at joints causing the bends (or such pain you keep every joint bent in an attempt to reduce it... ie fetal position)
Because he does not inhale any additional air the gas in his blood does not increase. Because it does not increase it does not become super saturated and therefor as he ascends and the pressure lowers his blood can contain the gasses dissolved there in.

Yup, pretty right on with that description. Basically since the same air in his lungs is descending with him, it equalizes with the pressure as he goes down/up. Tanks bring a different saturation into the mix and thus 'ze bends'.
You can get the bends even in a lake, my dad relayed a CB radio distress call when in Tennessee because some folks came up too quick when diving in Lake Norris.

Re: Underwater 'basejumping' at Dean's Blue Hole
just a few things...
#1. nothing good comes from deep ass holes in the ocean. Krakkens. Crabs. Banthas. Syphillis. Whatever. Notice how there wasn't any other major living thing down there.....so leave it as it was.
#2. What about the pressure? Jesus christ.....at the minimum, he's at ...what....50m? Maybe 100m? that is shit balls deep. Imagine your ears when you go to the bottom of your neighborhood pool....and then multiply that X 10. Of course, they would have done this in takes, with him equalizing. But still.....fucking ouch. And either way, to prevent him from getting sick in a rapid ascent, he had to NOT breathe...meaning they only had a few minutes per take to do this? Certainly not all in one take (unless they had 10 camera men at all those angles, which I don't see).
#3. fucking serious. Crazy ocean whale crab monsters live in holes like that. How else you think that hole got there? To eat hippies and suckers. So stop playing around, and go back to the land, mammal.

correction.
200 fucking meters.

But they're only going to about 75-100 (meaning the hole KEEPS GOING). Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.
