    BRAKES!!!!

    Hate them...so much.

Heard a squeaking noise that only happens when I accelerate. Took a shot in the dark and replaced the pads in the rear. There was a shim that was in betweem tje pad and the caliper that apparently caused the pads to stay pressed against the rotor. This caused LOTS of smoke out of the right rear. We took out the little shim thing and it made it better, no more smoke. But there is still a squeak, plus the sound of the pad scraping against the rusty lip on the rotor.

should have turned the rotors. it might not be brakes. is it a high pitch squeak? a bearing?

Well it's actually a rotor/drum parking brake combination, and it was too much of a hassle to take everything off. And I'd say it's fairly high pitched, It starts slow depending on my speed. Once I get going fast enough the sound dissapears. A mechanic I visited yesterday rode with me and he says he thinks it's something inside the drum.

Yeah, the shim that was stuck in there caused irregularities in the surface of the drum, which will contribute to that. Also, make sure all the springs for the shoes are in place, if one of the springs broke out the shoe will wobble and cause the squeaking as well, it did on my truck. What happened was the spring that kept the shoe stable and not move left and right broke out, and the spring got stuck under the other shoe and dug a huge groove in the drum, squeaking all the time. As soon as I fixed that it was gone. I still get some low tone squeaks, but that is because I need to get new drums and shoes (which I will be next week )

I caved in and bought new shoes and rotors for the rear end. I'm having it installed tomorrow because I'm done fucking with it at this point, plus my brakes release a god awful smell.

Hey, not as bad as having an emo radiator that randomly decides to leak early in the day, and then later it is fine.....

    Re: BRAKES!!!!

Bust is it 4 wheel discs or drums in the rear? If its 4 wheel discs and your getting noise and smoke then you have a caliper sticking. If its drums in the back or discs with an internal drum for the e brake then more then likely the smoke and noise is from one of the pads for the ebrake coming off of the backing. The shim itself on any set of brakes will not cause smoking. You can get some noise but never smoke. It would have to be a caliper sticking in order to do that.

On another note you need to be carefull when your getting smoke from any part of a brake system. On more then one occasion on other peoples cars i have had to put fires out from just brakes dragging. It gets hot enough to ignite the tire. The bearing is an easy one to tell if its the issue. Jack the car up and shake the tire from top to bottom. If you have movement you have a bad bearing.

on that note jack it up and spin the hell out of each wheel and isolate where the squeak is

I have a disc with a internal drum for the parking brake. I bought a whole new rotor/drum and shoes, and they are being replaced tomorrow...hopefully that will fix it.
