    Resume Help

Ok so after about 6 months of applying to every engineering job I see a listing for I have not gotten so much as a call back from any of these companies. Im starting to think that it is my resume that is hindering me in this endeavor. I guess what Im asking is if any of you guys out there would be willing to critique it and give me tips on how to improve my resume. This would be greatly appreciated by me if you would want to do this.

    Re: Resume Help

There is a HUGE over abundance of engineers out there right now.At my job,we hiring them at around 25,000 a year plus bennies. The reason is because of lack of experience. We have engineers making 75,000+ but the company is slowly getting rid of them because they can save money on the cheaper labor. Bring them in cheap, use the shit out of them, get rid of them, repeat. Its a shitty thing thing to do but corporations arent for their people anymore.Maybe the small companies are but big corps arent.

Maybe you can just goto the companies and SELL yourself. Tell and show them what you have to offer them. I know if I had a company,if someone showed up instead of just giving out a reume, and made the effort to tell me what they had to offer, I would snag them up in a minute.

I can't agree with the above, though, I don't have any numbers to back it up. Everything I've heard has been the opposite. Now, many folks confuse a two-year technical degree with the term "engineer" used in the name and a degree from an ABET-accredited engineering technology program which would be required if you intended to obtain professional licensure from the state board. Either that or you are referring to field engineers, although, I've never heard of a field engineer that makes 25K, I guess maybe if the living expense for the area is dirt cheap... Anyways, I would never join a large company, I wouldn't think you would get a broad enough experience in whatever field you are working in.

I would have to disagree with that one. While I miss the days of designing building programming and testing a product from start to finish with a small dedicated team, I absolutely love working for a large company right now. My benefits pay and job security are all much better than if I was doing contract engineering work in a small company in Silicon Valley.

Also, I have never seen any engineering position offer less than $50,000... Even the low end technology ones. I'm not sure where you are seeing $25,000 engineer jobs but it sounds more like a tech at best.

Also, what type of degree do you have? There are a number of engineers here with various backgrounds who might be able to help you out. We a few EEs, at least one ME and even a nuclear engineer.

have you tried applying in different town, states etc.? I know where I live, "alabama" there are tons of engineering jobs. The Redstone Arsenal is a Military base outside of Huntsville. I know they are always looking for some sort of engineer. Google it and see what you come up with. If you don't want to move its still worth just browsing.

Yea, I was thinking a tech as well.

In regards to working for a big company, I haven't had any experience with that yet but I suppose I would expect to be limited in the number of duties I'd be responsible for but I guess I could be wrong.
