MIA for a few days
im having huge internet problems that even my geek squad friends are baffled about....its weird, my network connections say im connected, all my lights on my modem are good, the data light flickers like crazy, but once i close a browser window or try to start up CS i lose my connection,,,but yet it still says i have a good connection. So ill be out for a few days and once i get this resolved, ill be back of course....hopefully this will last only one more day. See yall when i see yall!!

RE: MIA for a few days
Sorry.. NIC = Network Interface Card. The place where your LAN cable plugs in, assuming you aren't connecting via USB to a modem or something. Try replacing it--I've seen a few that caused some really weird problems rather than just failing altogether.

RE: MIA for a few days
Yep, they're cheap and easy to swap out, and help with the process of elimination. Your issue is probably more Windows related though, if I had to guess. Have you tried uninstalling the NIC via the device manager, then reinstalling with new TCP/IP protocols, the latest NIC driver, etc?
Unlike older versions of Windows, XP won't allow you to uninstall the TCP/IP protocols from a network connection that requires it, so you have to actually uninstall it via the Device Manager and reinstall again. Here's what I suggest:
1. Identify your NIC and locate the latest driver for it on the net. Download said driver to a folder somewhere.
2. Right click My Computer, go to Properties, click the Hardware tab, then Device Manager. Double click "Network adapters" and right click the NIC, which will likely be labeled with NIC, 10/100, Gigabit, Intel Pro VE, RealTek, or any concoction of these terms. It won't be "1394 Net Adapter" or any modem, so it's pretty much a process of elimination. Once you've identified the NIC in the list, right click it and Uninstall.
3. Reboot your system.
4. Upon reboot, XP will say "Found New Hardware" and begin searching for the NIC driver. If it can't locate it, direct it to the folder in which you saved the latest driver.
5. Once the NIC is installed, everything else will likely be automatic and you should be online.
