For those of you who have lived in/around 'Bama
I'll be mooving from the Berkshires down to BHAM at the end of October - I'll be working and studying at UAB.
Right now I'm looking at 2 very different areas. I'm under-30 and single with moderate amounts of "stuff" but little furniture. So... a 1BR would work but I'm thinking of getting a 2BR just so I can have a computer room and then get some real furniture for the living room (I turned my current 1BR into a total shithole by basically living out of the living room for the past 3 years, and I think having another room for junk will prevent that).
One is an apartment recommended by my new boss down in Hoover, but I've also been looking for things closer to 5 points/Southside/Highland area cuz that's closer to campus and city stuff. I'd really like to go on foot/bike/moto for things like food instead of having to suffer in the land of divided highways and stripmalls (which is what happens when you live down in the burbs like that). Right now I pay 725/mo for a 1BR in the middle of a cowtown so that's basically what my budget is gonna be. I'd also like to have my own washer/dryer hookup if possible, and no "free internet" since free internet is gonna be shared and shitty.
I figured a bunch of you are southerners, so anyone wanna give this carpetbagging cow a clue?

They have really shaped up the south side area over the past few years and if I were an under 30's single guy I would probably consider that area. There are a not of nice restaurants and bars that fall in many different price ranges. Hoover is a nice area depending on where you live. They have some really nice apartment complexes and some where 15 people live in a 2 bedroom apt. I have been in the Birmingham area pretty much my whole life. Let me know what I can help you with. I currently live in Mountain Brook which is just over the hill from south side. May let you buy me a beer some time.

Thanks for the offer Nuckle, maybe I should be the one buying you the drink after we're all said and done
I'll look you up once I get settled in, but I start work in November and the holidays are gonna be interesting this year, not sure if I'm gonna fly back to my 'rents for them or not, and I start school in Jan.
Here's where my new boss used to live before buying a house: waterfordlandingapts.net (I used to work and chill with this guy when we were both in CT, and he rehired me to go down to bham).
I have a couple of places bookmarked in Southside from postlets.com, along 16th Ave South. (1100s, 1900s) 1700s 17th ave south as well. Near Highland I found a rental at 2727 Highland Ave. South as well as a building in 1316 33rd St. S. I also found a list of rentals at Southside Apartments in Birmingham, AL by The Property Managers but they all looked expensive or dumpy or both

I am not up to speed on Rental rates at all to be honest. I would think that if you cant find something you like in your price range down town you would be able to in Hoover and still be close to UAB. Certainly parts to stay away from, Roebuck, Bessemer, Tarrant, Ensley, Fairfield. Trussville, parts of Leeds, Hoover, Pelham and Parts of Irondale would all be ok and possible in your price range. Maybe look for a roommate?
