Re: Should College Athletes Get Paid?
While the college makes money they spend a shitload. Players get free food, free insurance, free room and board, free travel. Multiply all those costs times 85.
Players can get Pell grants which can currently give them up to $5500 tax free. So after all expenses paid they have $105 dollars a week to spend.

Re: Should College Athletes Get Paid?
Well in America you are worth your fair market value and those athletes services are worth more than what some run of the mill student can provide to a school.
We have to just come to grips that some people are going to make a shitload more compensation than us for doing things we think are inferior to our skills. If you can't understand that concept of demanding what you are worth then get yoself checked so to speak i guess.
I don't see you or me being DIRECTLY responsible for pulling in 10s of millions of dollars to our entity. Who cares if they love their sport? I like my job does that influence what I demand as pay? No.
And "the man" of the NCAA is a bunch of administrator type people sucking up all that money, while the players and coaches are what actually makes the game happen. I dunno who wouldnt want to stick it to the red tape.

Re: Should College Athletes Get Paid?
VERY SMALL price to pay for the experience/exposure you are getting that will launch you into a 7 figure yearly salary at age 21-22.
I mean seriously, if you are bitching about this as a player, then you don't need to be in school, b/c you're too ignorant and short sighted for it anyway.
And if my boss told me she'd pay for rent, bills, etc (even without money to go to the movies or what not)... for 2-3 years and if I excelled at my job I could make 7 figures per year after that, I'd take that once she was halfway into her offer and smile while I did it.

12-25-10, 02:48 AM #15There are over 100 D1 football programs with something like 60-70 scholarships each. The are 30 NFL teams each with a 54 man roster, and not even all of them make a million. Getting a scholarship and playing in college is no guarantee of millions, and even if it was that doesn't pay for a date tonight, and if it did then you would be violating NCAA rules.

Re: Should College Athletes Get Paid?
So at worst you come away with an excellent college education and ZERO student loans. And if you aren't going to make millions in the NFL, then odds are you aren't what fans are paying to see anyways. I'll take the league minimum for the same "limitations" (as you guys see them) for 2, 3 or even 4 years, if I can make $700,000 per year at age 22.

Re: Should College Athletes Get Paid?
So that is football... nearly every other sport doesn't have those great opportunities for after college. In gymnastics, once you're out of college, you're done with the sport for the most part, there is no money in it. Football is not representative of NCAA athletes.

Most schools aren't making money off of their athletic department. I don't want athletes to get paid more because athletic departments can barely afford what they have now, and sports programs are constantly being dropped.(I know Men's Gymnastics suffers from this problem).
And also, not every athlete gets a full ride, there are partial scholarships and walk-ons as well. There are different levels of 'full ride' too. Some 'full ride' students are actually given some extra spending money anyways.

Re: Should College Athletes Get Paid?
We all were maybe leaning towards the football side of things since it started in the Cam Newton thread, but when it comes to the other sports, such as gymanstics, a partial scholly is better than nothing. And if you feel it isn't worth it, then go get a job that "pays" more. I'd like to get a scholarship for doing certain things I enjoy doing, but I can't (and didn't). That's life.
Your gymnastics comment(s) proves my point.....it's an EXTRA CURRICULAR activity. You CHOOSE to be there. If players don't like it, then don't play/participate, and don't get a scholarship.
If players feel they can gain financial benefit greater than they are right now, then I'd say feel free to venture into whatever endeavor where you can off the field.
