Should College Athletes Get Paid?

Well my lil bro plays golf for a D3 school, and gets a pretty shabby scholarship at the same time something like 2 grand a year. Hes one of those college athletes that wont be making millions out of college, tons of student loans because he cant get a part time job (against NCAA rules) and really cant work during the summer because hes practicing all the time. People like him and many others do this because they love the sport they are playing and want to play, yet barely survive because of NCAA regulations. There are students that aren't in it for money after school, but for love of the game. If your not on the fast track to the pros and what not, why shouldn't you be able to get a lil extra from the university or get a job to help out during the year?

myself and 2 of my brothers played FCS (I-AA) college football. and the amount of time you put in via practice and preparation is so disproportionate to the actual season that i think paying athletes is worth exploring. that goes for any sport at that level or higher. you just can't compete at those levels without year round commitment. period.

considering off field expenses coupled with the classroom/education opporunity costs (which are compounded by missed non-sport professional opportunites), then add in the staggering revenues some of these programs generate... i don't see some additional compensation as out of line. then throw in long-term health issues that come with years of football...

i'm not saying that scholarships aren't a large part of the answer. i know mine was worth about $100,000 given tuition room & board... but that's not all it's worth imo.

great post manno. I dont play sports but I try to imagine what its like for those student athletes that do and what you wrote is what I always thought.

In a way it could help big colleges get better teams but smaller colleges are screwed so no.

I have to be very short.

They should get more than they get now. These schools jerk many of these kids straight out of the hood and send them to school. Once there they have no spending money at all. Sure they have food, a place to sleep and those type things but they have to provide their own money to go out on a date. They need a little spending money in my opinion but it would need to be a set amount from college to college.

No don't pay them, and if they are good enough to make the school millions of dollars then even more reason not to pay them because they are going to make it to the NFL and make at least minimum wage which is a pretty fucking nice living
